We present interferometric and single-dish mid-infrared observations of a sample of massive young stellar objects (BN-type objects), using VLTI-MIDI (10 micron) and Subaru-COMICS (24.5 micron). We discuss the regions S140, Mon R2, M8E-IR, and W33A. The observations probe the inner regions of the dusty envelope at scales of 50 milli arcsecond and 0.6 arcsec (100-1000 AU), respectively. Simultaneous model fits to spectral energy distributions and spatial data are achieved using self-consistent spherical envelope modelling. We conclude that those MYSO envelopes that are best described by a spherical geometry, the commensurate density distribution is a powerlaw with index -1.0. Such a powerlaw is predicted if the envelope is supported by turbulence on the 100-1000AU scales probed with MIDI and COMICS, but the role of rotation at these spatial scales need testing.

High spatial resolution mid-infrared (MIR) 12 mum continuum imaging of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) obtained by VLT/VISIR is presented. The goal of this investigation is to determine if the nuclear MIR emission of LLAGN is consistent with the existence of a dusty obscuring torus. A sample of 17 nearby LLAGN was selected and combined with archival VISIR data of 9 additional LLAGN with available X-ray measurements. Of the 17 observed LLAGN, 7 are detected, while upper limits are derived for the 10 non-detections. All detections except NGC 3125 appear point-like on a spatial scale of sim 0.35. The detections do not significantly deviate from the known MIR-X-ray correlation but extend it by a factor of sim 10 down to luminosities < 10^41 erg/s with a narrow scatter. The latter is dominated by the uncertainties in the X-ray luminosity. Interestingly, a similar correlation with comparable slope but with a normalization differing by sim 2.6 orders of magnitude has been found for local starburst galaxies. In addition, the VISIR data are compared with lower spatial resolution data from Spitzer/IRS and IRAS. By using a scaled starburst template SED and the PAH 11.3 mum emission line the maximum nuclear star formation contamination to the VISIR photometry is restricted to < 30% for 75% of the LLAGN. Exceptions are NGC 1097 and NGC 1566, which may possess unresolved strong PAH emission. Furthermore, within the uncertainties the MIR-X-ray luminosity ratio is unchanged over more than 4 orders of magnitude in accretion rate. These results are consistent with the existence of the dusty torus in all observed LLAGN, although the jet or accretion disk as origin of the MIR emission cannot be excluded. Finally, the fact that the MIR-X-ray correlation holds for all LLAGN and Seyferts makes it a very useful empirical tool for converting between the MIR and X-ray powers of these nuclei.
Multiplicity is one of the most fundamental observable properties of massive O-type stars and offers a promising way to discriminate between massive star formation theories. Nevertheless, companions at separations between 1 and 100 mas remain mostly unknown due to intrinsic observational limitations. [...] The Southern MAssive Stars at High angular resolution survey (SMASH+) was designed to fill this gap by providing the first systematic interferometric survey of Galactic massive stars. We observed 117 O-type stars with VLTI/PIONIER and 162 O-type stars with NACO/SAM, respectively probing the separation ranges 1-45 and 30-250mas and brightness contrasts of Delta H < 4 and Delta H < 5. Taking advantage of NACOs field-of-view, we further uniformly searched for visual companions in an 8-radius down to Delta H = 8. This paper describes the observations and data analysis, reports the discovery of almost 200 new companions in the separation range from 1mas to 8 and presents the catalog of detections, including the first resolved measurements of over a dozen known long-period spectroscopic binaries. Excluding known runaway stars for which no companions are detected, 96 objects in our main sample (DEC < 0 deg; H<7.5) were observed both with PIONIER and NACO/SAM. The fraction of these stars with at least one resolved companion within 200mas is 0.53. Accounting for known but unresolved spectroscopic or eclipsing companions, the multiplicity fraction at separation < 8 increases to f_m = 0.91 +/- 0.03. The fraction of luminosity class V stars that have a bound companion reaches 100% at 30mas while their average number of physically connected companions within 8 is f_c = 2.2 +/- 0.3. This demonstrates that massive stars form nearly exclusively in multiple systems. Additionally, the nine non-thermal (NT) radio emitters observed by SMASH+ are all resolved [...]

We present high resolution (R = 75,000-100,000) mid-infrared spectra of the high-mass embedded young star IRS 1 in the NGC 7538 star-forming region. Absorption lines from many rotational states of C2H2, 13C12CH2, CH3, CH4, NH3, HCN, HNCO, and CS are seen. The gas temperature, column density, covering factor, line width, and Doppler shift for each molecule are derived. All molecules were fit with two velocity components between -54 and -63 km/s. We find high column densities (~ 10e16 cm^2) for all the observed molecules compared to values previously reported and present new results for CH3 and HNCO. Several physical and chemical models are considered. The favored model involves a nearly edge-on disk around a massive star. Radiation from dust in the inner disk passes through the disk atmosphere, where large molecular column densities can produce the observed absorption line spectrum.
We investigate the evolutionary connection between local IR-bright galaxies ($log L_{rm IR}ge 11.4,L_odot$) and quasars. We use high angular resolution ($sim$ 0.3-0.4 arcsec $sim$ few hundred parsecs) $8-13,mu$m ground-based spectroscopy to disentang le the AGN mid-IR properties from those of star formation. The comparison between the nuclear $11.3,mu$m PAH feature emission and that measured with Spitzer/IRS indicates that the star formation is extended over a few kpc in the IR-bright galaxies. The AGN contribution to the total IR luminosity of IR-bright galaxies is lower than in quasars. Although the dust distribution is predicted to change as IR-bright galaxies evolve to IR-bright quasars and then to optical quasars, we show that the AGN mid-IR emission of all the quasars in our sample is not significantly different. In contrast, the nuclear emission of IR-bright galaxies with low AGN contributions appears more heavily embedded in dust although there is no clear trend with the interaction stage or projected nuclear separation. This suggests that the changes in the distribution of the nuclear obscuring material may be taking place rapidly and at different interaction stages washing out the evidence of an evolutionary path. When compared to normal AGN, the nuclear star formation activity of quasars appears to be dimming whereas it is enhanced in some IR-bright nuclei, suggesting that the latter are in an earlier star-formation dominated phase.

The very inner structure of massive young stellar objects (YSOs) is difficult to trace. With conventional observational methods we identify structures still several hundreds of AU in size. However, the (proto-)stellar growth takes place at the innerm ost regions (<100 AU) where the actual mass transfer onto the forming high-mass star occurs. We present results from our programme toward massive YSOs at the VLTI, utilising the two-element interferometer MIDI. To date, we observed 10 well-known massive YSOs down to scales of 20 mas (typically corresponding to 20 - 40 AU for our targets) in the 8-13 micron region. We clearly resolve these objects which results in low visibilities and sizes in the order of 30-50 mas. For two objects, we show results of our modelling. We demonstrate that the MIDI data can reveal decisive structure information for massive YSOs. They are often pivotal in order to resolve ambiguities still immanent in model parameters derived from sole SED fitting.
