The optical spectroscopy of a single InAs quantum dot doped with a single Mn atom is studied using a model Hamiltonian that includes the exchange interactions between the spins of the quantum dot electron-hole pair, the Mn atom and the acceptor hole. Our model permits to link the photoluminescence spectra to the Mn spin states after photon emission. We focus on the relation between the charge state of the Mn, $A^0$ or $A^-$, and the different spectra which result through either band-to-band or band-to-acceptor transitions. We consider both neutral and negatively charged dots. Our model is able to account for recent experimental results on single Mn doped InAs PL spectra and can be used to account for future experiments in GaAs quantum dots. Similarities and differences with the case of single Mn doped CdTe quantum dots are discussed.

Photoluminescence data from single, self-assembled InAs/InP quantum dots in magnetic fields up to 7 T are presented. Exciton g-factors are obtained for dots of varying height, corresponding to ground state emission energies ranging from 780 meV to 11 00 meV. A monotonic increase of the g-factor from -2 to +1.2 is observed as the dot height decreases. The trend is well reproduced by sp3 tight binding calculations, which show that the hole g-factor is sensitive to confinement effects through orbital angular momentum mixing between the light-hole and heavy-hole valence bands. We demonstrate tunability of the exciton g-factor by manipulating the quantum dot dimensions using pyramidal InP nanotemplates.
We investigate theoretically the spectral and dynamical effects of the short-range exchange interaction between a single manganese (Mn) atom hosted by cylindrical CdTe quantum dots and its light-hole excitons or biexcitons. Our approach is based on t he Kohn-Luttinger KP theory and configuration interaction method, the dynamics of the system in the presence of intraband relaxation being derived from the von Neumann-Lindblad equation. The complex structure of the light-hole exciton absorption spectrum reveals the exchange-induced exciton mixing and depends strongly on the Mn position. In particular, if the Mn atom is closer to the edges of the cylinder the bright and dark light-hole excitons are mixed by the hole-Mn exchange alone. Consequently, their populations exhibit exchange-induced Rabi oscillations which can be viewed as optical signatures of light-hole spin reversal. Similar results are obtained for mixed biexcitons, in this case the exchange-induced Rabi oscillations being damped by the intraband hole relaxation processes. The effect of light-hole heavy-hole mixing is also discussed.
With gate-defined electrostatic traps fabricated on a double quantum well we are able to realize an optically active and voltage-tunable quantum dot confining individual, long-living, spatially indirect excitons. We study the transition from multi ex citons down to a single indirect exciton. In the few exciton regime, we observe discrete emission lines reflecting the interplay of dipolar interexcitonic repulsion and spatial quantization. The quantum dot states are tunable by gate voltage and employing a magnetic field results in a diamagnetic shift. The scheme introduces a new gate-defined platform for creating and controlling optically active quantum dots and opens the route to lithographically defined coupled quantum dot arrays with tunable in-plane coupling and voltage-controlled optical properties of single charge and spin states.
We report on the micro-photoluminescence spectroscopy of InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QD) doped by a single Mn atom in a magnetic field either longitudinal or perpendicular to the optical axis. In both cases the spectral features of positive trion (X+) ar e found to split into strongly circularly polarized components, an effect very surprising in a perpendicular magnetic field. The field-induced splitting is ascribed to the transverse Zeeman splitting of the neutral acceptor complex A0 issued by the Mn impurity, whereas the circular optical selection rules result from the p-d exchange which acts as a very strong longitudinal magnetic field inhibiting the spin mixing by the transverse field of the QD heavy-hole ground state. A theoretical model of the spin interactions which includes (i) the local strain anisotropy experienced by the acceptor level and (ii) the anisotropic exchange due to the out-of-center Mn position provides a very good agreement with our observations.

We have studied the emission properties of self-organized InAs quantum dots (QDs) grown in an InGaAs quantum well by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Low-temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy shows emission from single QDs around 1300 nm; we clearly observe the formation of neutral and charged exciton and biexciton states, and we obtain a biexciton binding energy of 3.1 meV. The dots exhibit an s-p shell splitting of approximately 100 meV, indicating strong confinement.
