Metastable manganite perovskites displaying the antiferromagnetic so-called E-phase are predicted to be multiferroic. Due to the need of high-pressures for the synthesis of this phase, this prediction has only been confirmed in bulk HoMnO3. Here we report on the growth and characterization of YbMnO3 perovskite thin films grown under epitaxial strain. Highly-oriented thin films, with thickness down to ~30nm, can be obtained showing magneto-dielectric coupling and magnetic responses as those expected for the E-phase. We observe that the magnetic properties depart from the bulk behavior only in the case of ultrathin films (d< 30nm), which display a glassy magnetic behavior. We show that strain effects alone cannot account for this difference and that the film morphology plays, instead, a crucial role.

The dielectric properties of NiO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition have been studied as a function of strain at temperature from 10 to 300 K. Above 150 K, the contribution of space-charge polarization to the dielectric permittivity of NiO f ilms becomes dominant and the more defective films, which were grown at low temperatures show a drastical increase in the dielectric constant up to room temperature. While the atomically-ordered film, which was grown at high temperature doesnt show any considerable change in the dielectric constant in the range from 10 to 300 K. Below 100 K, the effect of strain on the dielectric constant becomes clear. An increase in dielectric permittivity is observed in the strained films while the relaxed film doesnt show any remarkable deviation from its bulk value. The low-temperature dielectric behavior of NiO thin film can be interpreted based on the effect of strain on the lattice dynamics of rocksalt binary oxides.
The influence of La and Nd co-substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films was examined. Epitaxial thin films of pure and, La and Nd co-doped BFO on the SrRuO3 buffered single crystal SrTiO3 (001) substrate were d eposited using pulsed laser deposition. The structural change in co doped La and Nd BFO thin films which was caused by the changes of force constant in the crystal lattice induced by ionic radii mismatch was investigated. Raman spectroscopy studies manifest the structural change in doped BFO films from rhombohedral to monoclinic distorted phase which is induced by the co substitution of La and Nd. Room temperature magnetic hysteresis curves indicated that saturation magnetization is enhanced in the doped film with saturation magnetization of ~20 emu/cm3. The dielectric and magnetic properties are effectively improved in BLNFO films compared to pure BFO thin films.
The double perovskite Sr2CrReO6 is an interesting material for spintronics, showing ferrimagnetism up to 635 K with a predicted high spin polarization of about 86%. We fabricated Sr2CrReO6 epitaxial films by pulsed laser deposition on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates. Phase-pure films with optimum crystallographic and magnetic properties were obtained by growing at a substrate temperature of 700 degree C in pure O2 of 6.6x10-4 mbar. The films are c-axis oriented, coherently strained, and show less than 20% anti-site defects. The magnetization curves reveal high saturation magnetization of 0.8 muB per formula unit and high coercivity of 1.1 T, as well as a strong magnetic anisotropy.
CaFe2O4 is a highly anisotropic antiferromagnet reported to display two spin arrangements with up-up-down-down (phase A) and up-down-up-down (phase B) configurations. The relative stability of these phases is ruled by the competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions between Fe3+ spins arranged in two different environments, but a complete understanding of the magnetic structure of this material does not exist yet. In this study we investigate epitaxial CaFe2O4 thin films grown on TiO2 (110) substrates by means of Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). Structural characterization reveals the coexistence of two out-of-plane crystal orientations and the formation of three in-plane oriented domains. The magnetic properties of the films, investigated macroscopically as well as locally, including highly sensitive Mossbauer spectroscopy, reveal the presence of just one order parameter showing long-range ordering below T = 185 K and the critical nature of the transition. In addition, a non-zero in-plane magnetization is found, consistent with the presence of uncompensated spins at phase or domain boundaries, as proposed for bulk samples.
Chalcogenide perovskites have emerged as a new class of electronic materials, but fundamental properties and applications of chalcogenide perovskites remain limited by the lack of high quality epitaxial thin films. We report epitaxial thin film growt h of BaZrS3, a prototypical chalcogenide, by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction studies show that the films are strongly textured out of plane and have a clear in-plane epitaxial relationship with the substrate. Electron microscopy studies confirm the presence of epitaxy for the first few layers of the film at the interface, even though away from the interface the films are polycrystalline with a large number of extended defects suggesting the potential for further improvement in growth. X-Ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy show smooth film surfaces and interfaces between the substrate and the film. The films show strong light absorption near the band edge and photoluminescence in the visible region. The photodetector devices show fast and efficient photo response with the highest ON/OFF ratio reported for BaZrS3 films thus far. Our study opens up opportunities to realize epitaxial thin films, heterostructures, and superlattices of chalcogenide perovskites to probe fundamental physical phenomena and the resultant electronic and photonic device technologies.
