We report the synthesis and basic properties of single crystals of a new binary compound, Yb$_{3}$Pt$_{4}$. The Yb ions in this compound are fully trivalent, and heat capacity measurements show that the crystal field scheme involves a doublet ground state, well separated from the excited states, which are fully occupied above $sim$ 150 K. The heat capacity displays a large, weakly first order anomaly at 2.4 K, where a cusp is observed in the magnetic susceptibility signalling the onset of antiferromagnetic order. The entropy associated with this order is the full Rln2 of the doublet ground state, however the magnetic susceptibility in the ordered phase is dominated by a large and temperature independent component below the Neel temperature. The heat capacity in the ordered state originates with ferromagnetic spin waves, giving evidence for the inherently local moment character of the ordered state. The electrical resistivity is unusually large, and becomes quadratic in temperature exactly at the Neel temperature. The absence of analogous Fermi liquid behavior in the heat capacity and the magnetic susceptibility implies that Yb$_{3}$Pt$_{4}$ is a low electron density system, where the Fermi surface is further gapped by the onset of magnetic order.

New phases of matter emerge at the edge of magnetic instabilities. In local moment systems, such as heavy fermions, the magnetism can be destabilized by pressure, chemical doping, and, rarely, by magnetic field, towards a zero-temperature transition at a quantum critical point (QCP). Even more rare are instances of QCPs induced by pressure or doping in itinerant moment systems, with no known examples of analogous field-induced textit{T} = 0 transitions. Here we report the discovery of a new itinerant antiferromagnet with no magnetic constituents, in single crystals of Ti$_3$Cu$_4$ with $T_N$ = 11.3 K. Band structure calculations point to an orbital-selective, spin density wave ground state, a consequence of the square net structural motif in Ti$_3$Cu$_4$. A small magnetic field, $H_C$ = 4.87 T, suppresses the long-range order via a continuous second-order transition, resulting in a field-induced QCP. The magnetic Gruneisen ratio diverges as $H rightarrow H_C$ and $Trightarrow0$, with a sign change at $H_C$ and $T^{-1}$ scaling at $H~=~H_C$, providing evidence from thermodynamic measurements for quantum criticality for $H parallel c$. Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) to Fermi liquid (FL) crossover is observed close to the QCP, as revealed by the power law behavior of the electrical resistivity.

In this paper, we study the spin excitation properties of the frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Yb(BaBO$_3$)$_3$ with nuclear magnetic resonance. From the spectral analysis, neither magnetic ordering nor spin freezing is observed with tem perature down to $T=0.26$ K, far below its Curie-Weiss temperature $|theta_w|sim2.3$ K. From the nuclear relaxation measurement, precise temperature-independent spin-lattice relaxation rates are observed at low temperatures under a weak magnetic field, indicating the gapless spin excitations. Further increasing the field intensity, we observe a spin excitation gap with the gap size proportional to the field intensity. These phenomena suggest a very unusual strongly correlated quantum disordered phase, and the implications for the quantum spin liquid state are further discussed.
We report specific heat ($C$) and magnetization ($M$) of single crystalline Ce$_4$Pt$_{12}$Sn$_{25}$ at temperature down to $sim$50mK and in fields up to 3T. $C/T$ exhibits a sharp anomaly at 180mK, with a large $Delta C/Tsim$30J/molK$^2$-Ce, which, together with the corresponding cusp-like magnetization anomaly, indicates an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state with a Neel temperature $T_N$=180mK. Numerical calculations based on a Heisenberg model reproduce both zero-field $C$ and $M$ data, thus placing Ce$_4$Pt$_{12}$Sn$_{25}$ in the weak exchange coupling $J<J_c$ limit of the Doniach diagram, with a very small Kondo scale $T_Kll T_N$. Magnetic field suppresses the AFM state at $H^*approx$0.7T, much more effectively than expected from the Heisenberg model, indicating additional effects possibly due to frustration or residual Kondo screening.
We report the results of high pressure x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption, and electrical transport measurements of Kondo insulator Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pt$_3$ up to 42 GPa, the highest pressure reached in the study of any Ce-based KI. We observe a smooth de crease in volume and movement toward intermediate Ce valence with pressure, both of which point to increased electron correlations. Despite this, temperature-dependent resistance data show the suppression of the interaction-driven ambient pressure insulating ground state. We also discuss potential ramifications of these results for the predicted topological KI state.

Our theoretical understanding of heavy-fermion compounds mainly derives from iconic models, such as those due to Kondo or Anderson. While providing invaluable qualitative insight, detailed comparisons to experiments are encumbered by the materials co mplexity, including the spin-orbit coupling, crystal fields, and ligand hybridizations. Here, we study the paradigmatic Kondo insulator Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pt$_3$ with a first principles dynamical mean-field method that includes these complications. We find that salient signatures of many-body effects in this material---large effective masses, the insulator-to-metal crossover, the concomitant emergence of Curie-Weiss behaviour and notable transfers of optical spectral weight---are captured quantitatively. With this validation, we elucidate the fabric of the many-body state. In particular, we extent the phenomenology of the Kondo crossover to time-scales of fluctuations: We evidence that spin and charge degrees of freedom each realize two regimes in which fluctuations adhere to vastly different decay laws. We find these regimes to be separated by a {it common} temperature $T^{max}_chi$, linked to the onset of Kondo screening. Interestingly, below (above) $T^{max}_chi$, valence fluctuations become faster (slower) than the dynamical screening of the local moments. Overall, however, spin and charge fluctuations occur on comparable time-scales of $mathcal{O}(0.5-12hbox{ fs})$, placing them on the brink of detection for modern time-resolved probes.
