The domain wall induced reversal dynamics in compressively strained GaMnAs was studied employing the magneto-optical Kerr effect and Kerr microscopy. Due to the influence of an uniaxial part in the in-plane magnetic anisotropy (90+/-Delta) domain walls with considerably different dynamic behavior are observed. While the (90+Delta) reversal is identified to be propagation dominated with a small number of domain walls, the case of (90-Delta) reversal includes the nucleation of many domain walls. The domain wall nucleation/propagation energy for both transitions are estimated using model calculations from which we conclude that single domain devices can be achievable using the (90+Delta) mode.

We combine magneto-optical imaging and a magnetic field pulse technique to study domain wall dynamics in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As layer with perpendicular easy axis. Contrary to ultrathin metallic layers, the depinning field is found to be smaller t han the Walker field, thereby allowing for the observation of the steady and precessional flow regimes. The domain wall width and damping parameters are determined self-consistently. The damping, 30 times larger than the one deduced from ferromagnetic resonance, is shown to essentially originate from the non-conservation of the magnetization modulus. An unpredicted damping resonance and a dissipation regime associated with the existence of horizontal Bloch lines are also revealed.
A highly strained BiFeO3 (BFO) thin film is transformed between phases with distinct structures and properties by nanosecond-duration applied electric field pulses. Time-resolved synchrotron x-ray microdiffraction shows that the steady-state transfor mation between phases is accompanied by a dynamical component that is reversed upon the removal of the field. Steady-state measurements reveal that approximately 20% of the volume of a BFO thin film grown on a LaAlO3 substrate can be reproducibly transformed between rhombohedral-like and tetragonal-like phases by electric field pulses with magnitudes up to 2 MV/cm. A transient component, in which the transformation is reversed following the end of the electric field pulse, can transform a similar fraction of the BFO layer and occurs rapidly time scale limited by the charging time constant of the thin film capacitor. The piezoelectric expansion of the tetragonal-like phase leads to a strain of up to 0.1%, with a lower limit of 10 pm/V for the piezoelectric coefficient of this phase. Density functional theory calculations provide insight into the mechanism of the phase transformation showing that imparting a transient strain of this magnitude favors a transformation from rhombohedral-like to tetragonal-like phase.
We report on current induced domain wall propagation in a patterned GaMnAs microwire with perpendicular magnetization. An unexpected slowing down of the propagation velocity has been found when the moving domain wall extends over only half of the wid th of the wire. This slowing down is related to the elongation of a longitudinal wall along the axis of the wire. By using an energy balance argument, the expected theoretical dependence of the velocity change has been calculated and compared with the experimental results. According to this, the energy associated to the longitudinal domain wall should change when a current passes through the wire. These results provide possible evidence of transverse spin diffusion along a longitudinal domain wall.
Extensive Kerr microscopy studies reveal a strongly temperature dependent domain wall dynamics in Hall-bars made from compressively strained GaMnAs. Depending on the temperature magnetic charging of domain walls is observed and nucleation rates depen d on the Hall-geometry with respect to the crystal axes. Above a critical temperature where a biaxial-to-uniaxial anisotropy transition occurs a drastic increase of nucleation events is observed. Below this temperature, the nucleation of domains tends to be rather insensitive to temperature. This first spatially resolved study of domain wall dynamics in patterned GaMnAs at variable temperatures has important implications for potential single domain magneto-logic devices made from ferromagnetic semiconductors.
SrTiO$_3$ is an incipient ferroelectric on the verge of a polar instability, which is avoided at low temperatures by quantum fluctuations. Within this unusual quantum paraelectric phase, superconductivity persists despite extremely dilute carrier den sities. Ferroelectric fluctuations have been suspected to play a role in the origin of superconductivity by contributing to electron pairing. To investigate this possibility, we used optical second harmonic generation to measure the doping and temperature dependence of the ferroelectric order parameter in compressively strained SrTiO$_3$ thin films. At low temperatures, we uncover a spontaneous out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization with an onset that correlates perfectly with normal-state electrical resistivity anomalies. These anomalies have previously been associated with an enhancement of the superconducting critical temperature in doped SrTiO$_3$ films, directly linking the ferroelectric and superconducting phases. We develop a long-range mean-field Ising model of the ferroelectric phase transition to interpret the data and extract the relevant energy scales in the system. Our results support a long-suspected connection between ferroelectricity and superconductivity in SrTiO$_3$, but call into question the role played by ferroelectric fluctuations.
