Reasoning about real number expressions in a proof assistant is challenging. Several problems in theorem proving can be solved by using exact real number computation. I have implemented a library for reasoning and computing with complete metric spaces in the Coq proof assistant and used this library to build a constructive real number implementation including elementary real number functions and proofs of correctness. Using this library, I have created a tactic that automatically proves strict inequalities over closed elementary real number expressions by computation.

In this article we present an ongoing effort to formalise quantum algorithms and results in quantum information theory using the proof assistant Isabelle/HOL. Formal methods being critical for the safety and security of algorithms and protocols, we f oresee their widespread use for quantum computing in the future. We have developed a large library for quantum computing in Isabelle based on a matrix representation for quantum circuits, successfully formalising the no-cloning theorem, quantum teleportation, Deutschs algorithm, the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm and the quantum Prisoners Dilemma. We discuss the design choices made and report on an outcome of our work in the field of quantum game theory.
We present a model/executable specification of smart contract execution in Coq. Our formalization allows for inter-contract communication and generalizes existing work by allowing modelling of both depth-first execution blockchains (like Ethereum) an d breadth-first execution blockchains (like Tezos). We represent smart contracts programs in Coqs functional language Gallina, enabling easier reasoning about functional correctness of concrete contracts than other approaches. In particular we develop a Congress contract in this style. This contract -- a simplified version of the infamous DAO -- is interesting because of its very dynamic communication pattern with other contracts. We give a high-level partial specification of the Congresss behavior, related to reentrancy, and prove that the Congress satisfies it for all possible smart contract execution orders.

We propose a functional implementation of emph{Multivariate Tower Automatic Differentiation}. Our implementation is intended to be used in implementing $C^infty$-structure computation of an arbitrary Weil algebra, which we discussed in the previous work.

Whereas proof assistants based on Higher-Order Logic benefit from external solvers automation, those based on Type Theory resist automation and thus require more expertise. Indeed, the latter use a more expressive logic which is further away from fir st-order logic, the logic of most automatic theorem provers. In this article, we develop a methodology to transform a subset of Coq goals into first-order statements that can be automatically discharged by automatic provers. The general idea is to write modular, pairwise independent transformations and combine them. Each of these eliminates a specific aspect of Coq logic towards first-order logic. As a proof of concept, we apply this methodology to a set of simple but crucial transformations which extend the local context with proven first-order assertions that make Coq definitions and algebraic types explicit. They allow users of Coq to solve non-trivial goals automatically. This methodology paves the way towards the definition and combination of more complex transformations, making Coq more accessible.
Exception handling is provided by most modern programming languages. It allows to deal with anomalous or exceptional events which require special processing. In computer algebra, exception handling is an efficient way to implement the dynamic evaluat ion paradigm: for instance, in linear algebra, dynamic evaluation can be used for applying programs which have been written for matrices with coefficients in a field to matrices with coefficients in a ring. Thus, a proof system for computer algebra should include a treatement of exceptions, which must rely on a careful description of a semantics of exceptions. The categorical notion of monad can be used for formalizing the raising of exceptions: this has been proposed by Moggi and implemented in Haskell. In this paper, we provide a proof system for exceptions which involves both raising and handling, by extending Moggis approach. Moreover, the core part of this proof system is dual to a proof system for side effects in imperative languages, which relies on the categorical notion of comonad. Both proof systems are implemented in the Coq proof assistant.
