We present a measurement of the transverse intensity distributions of the COSY proton beam at the target interaction point at ANKE at the injection energy of 45 MeV, and after acceleration at 2.65 GeV. At 2.65 GeV, the machine acceptance was determined as well. From the intensity distributions the beam size is determined, and together with the measured machine acceptance, the dimensions of a storage cell for the double-polarized experiments with the polarized internal gas target at the ANKE spectrometer are specified. An optimum storage cell for the ANKE experiments should have dimensions of 15mm x 20mm x 390mm (vertical x horizontal x longitudinal), whereby a luminosity of about 2.5*10^29 cm^-2*s^-1 with beams of 10^10 particles stored in COSY could be reached.

Some of the important results from the COSY-Juelich spin programme are summarised. These include the measurement of the deuteron beam momentum through the excitation of a depolarising resonance, which allowed the mass of the eta-meson to be determine d to high precision. The charge exchange of polarised deuterons on hydrogen gave rise to a detailed study of the spin dependence of large angle neutron-proton elastic scattering amplitudes. The measurements of the cross section and analysing powers for pion production in both pp and pn collisions at 353 MeV could be described very successfully in terms of a partial wave decomposition.
We summarise measurements of the COSY-11 collaboration concerning the excitation functions of the near threshold pseudoscalar meson production in the proton-proton interaction. The results are discussed in the context of the meson-nucleon and hyperon -nucleon interactions. We conclude that the $eta$-proton interaction is significantly stronger than the eta-proton interaction. Similarly, we found that the hyperon Lambda interacts with the nucleon considerably stronger than the hyperon Sigma, and that the interaction of (K-)-proton is much stronger than this of the (K+)-proton.
An exclusive measurement of the dd -> 3He n pi 0 reaction was carried at a beam momentum of p = 1.2 GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. For the first time data on the total cross section as well as differential distributions were obtained. The dat a are described with a phenomenological approach based on a combination of a quasi-free model and a partial wave expansion for three-body reaction. The total cross section is found to be sigma(tot) = (2.89 +- 0.01(stat) +- 0.06(sys) +- 0.29(norm)) mu b. The contribution of the quasi-free processes (with the neutron being target or beam spectator) accounts for 38% of the total cross section and dominates the differential distributions in specific regions of the phase space. The remaining part of the cross section can be described within a partial wave decomposition indicating the significance of p-wave contributions in the final state.
A laser ion source is under development at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla, in order to address deficiencies in the ion guide technique. The key elements of interest are those of a refractory nature, whose isotopes and isomers are widely studied using both laser spectroscopic and high precision mass measurement techniques. Yttrium has been the first element of choice for the new laser ion source. In this work we present a new coupled dye-Ti:Sapphire laser scheme and give a detailed discussion of the results obtained from laser ionization of yttrium atoms produced in an ion guide via joule heating of a filament. The importance of not only gas purity, but indeed the baseline vacuum pressure in the environment outside the ion guide is discussed in light of the fast gas phase chemistry seen in the yttrium system. A single laser shot model is introduced and is compared to the experimental data in order to extract the level of impurities within the gas cell.
A telescope of three silicon detectors has been installed close to the internal target position of the ANKE spectrometer, which is situated inside the ultra-high vacuum of the COSY-Juelich light-ion storage ring. The detection and identification of s low protons and deuterons emerging from a deuterium cluster-jet target thus becomes feasible. A good measurement of the energy and angle of such a spectator proton (p_sp) allows one to identify a reaction as having taken place on the neutron in the target and then to determine the kinematical variables of the ion-neutron system on an event-by-event basis over a range of c.m. energies. The system has been successfully tested under laboratory conditions. By measuring the spectator proton in the p d to p_sp d pi^0 reaction in coincidence with a fast deuteron in the ANKE Forward Detector, values of the p n to d pi^0 total cross-section have been deduced. Further applications of the telescope include the determination of the luminosity and beam polarisation which are required for several experiments.
