An analytical model previously developed to study the structure of the magnetic field for the TEXTOR-DED [S.S. Abdullaev et al. Phys. Plasmas, 6, 153 (1999)] is applied to the similar study of the Ergodic Divertor of Tore Supra tokamak [Ph. Ghendrih, Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion, 38, 1653 (1996)]. The coil configuration of ED Tore Supra consists of six modules equidistantly located along the toroidal direction on the low-field-side of the torus with given toroidal and poloidal extensions. The Hamiltonian formulation of field line equations in straight-field-line coordinates (Boozer coordinates) and the computationally efficient mapping method for integration of the Hamiltonian field line equations are used to study the magnetic field structure in the ED. Asymptotical formulas for the perturbation magnetic field created by the ED coils are obtained and the spectrum of magnetic perturbations is analyzed and compared with the one of the TEXTOR-DED. The structure of ergodic and laminar zones are studied by plotting Poincare sections, so-called laminar plots (contour plots of wall to wall connection lengths) and magnetic footprints. The radial profiles of field line diffusion coefficients are calculated for different perturbation currents and it is found that for the Tore Supra case in the ergodic zone the numerical field line diffusion coefficients perfectly follow the quasilinear formula for smaller perturbation currents although the situation is different for the maximum perturbation current.

The aim of this work is to provide an understanding of detachment at TCV with emphasis on analysis of the Balmer line emission. A new Divertor Spectroscopy System has been developed for this purpose. Further development of Balmer line analysis techni ques has allowed detailed information to be extracted from the three-body recombination contribution to the n=7 Balmer line intensity. During density ramps, the plasma at the target detaches as inferred from a drop in ion current to the target. At the same time the Balmer $6rightarrow2$ and $7rightarrow2$ line emission near the target is dominated by recombination. As the core density increases further, the density and recombination rate are rising all along the outer leg to the x-point while remaining highest at the target. Even at the highest core densities accessed (Greenwald fraction 0.7) the peaks in recombination and density may have moved not more than a few cm poloidally away from the target which is different to other, higher density tokamaks, where both the peak in recombination and density continue to move towards the x-point as the core density is increased. The inferred magnitude of recombination is small compared to the target ion current at the time detachment (particle flux drop) starts at the target. However, recombination may be having more localized effects (to a flux tube) which we cannot discern at this time. Later, at the highest densities achieved, the total recombination does reach levels similar to the particle flux.

The XGC1 edge gyrokinetic code is used for a high fidelity prediction for the width of the heat-flux to divertor plates in attached plasma condition. The simulation results are validated against the empirical scaling $lambda_q propto B_P^{-gamma}$ ob tained from present tokamak devices, where $lambda_q$ is the divertor heat-flux width mapped to the outboard midplane and $gamma_q=1.19$ as defined by T. Eich et al. [Nucl. Fusion 53 (2013) 093031], and $B_P$ is the magnitude of the poloidal magnetic field at outboard midplane separatrix surface. This empirical scaling predicts $lambda_q leq 1mm$ when extrapolated to ITER, which would require operation with very high separatrix densities $(n_{sep}/n_{Greenwald} > 0.6)$ in the Q=10 scenario to achieve semi-detached plasma operation and high radiative fractions leading to acceptable divertor power fluxes. XGC1 predicts, however, that $lambda_q$ for ITER is over 5 mm, suggesting that operation in the ITER Q=10 scenario with acceptable divertor power loads could be obtained over a wider range of plasma separatrix densities and radiative fractions. The physics reason behind this difference is, according to the XGC1 results, that while the ion magnetic drift contribution to the divertor heat-flux width is wider in the present tokamaks, the turbulent electron contribution is wider in ITER. A high current C-Mod discharge is found to be in a mixed regime: While the heat-flux width by the ion neoclassical magnetic drift is still wider than the turbulent electron heat-flux width, the heat-flux magnitude is dominated by the narrower electron heat-flux.

The sputtering of inside wall components of tokamaks can lead to the injection of supersaturated vapour in the plasma edge. The resulting condensation favours the formation of clusters which can give rise to solid particulates by further accretion. S puttering discharges are proposed to have highlight on the formation of carbonaceous dust observed in the tokamaks with graphite based wall components. The flux of the sputtered carbon atoms is evaluated in the conditions of our laboratory discharges as well as the evolution of their energy distribution. It is shown that a cooling mechanism occurs through collisions with the discharge argon atoms, leading to a nucleation phase. A comparison between the carbon structure of the resulting dust particles and a dust sample collected in the Tore Supra tokamak is proposed. The structural differences are discussed and can be correlated to specific plasma conditions.
A potentially important feature in a divertor design for a high-power tokamak is an extended and expanded divertor leg. The upgrade to MAST will allow a wide range of such divertor leg geometries to be produced, and hence will allow the roles of grea tly increased connection length and flux expansion to be experimentally tested. This will include testing the potential of the Super-X configuration [1]. The design process for the upgrade has required analysis of producing and controlling the magnetic configurations, and has included consideration of the roles that divertor closure and increasing magnetic connection length will play.

Recently, the collisionless expansion of spherical nanoplasmas has been analyzed with a new ergodic model, clarifying the transition from hydrodynamic-like to Coulomb-explosion regimes, and providing accurate laws for the relevant features of the phe nomenon. A complete derivation of the model is here presented. The important issue of the self-consistent initial conditions is addressed by analyzing the initial charging transient due to the electron expansion, in the approximation of immobile ions. A comparison among different kinetic models for the expansion is presented, showing that the ergodic model provides a simplified description, which retains the essential information on the electron distribution, in particular, the energy spectrum. Results are presented for a wide range of initial conditions (determined from a single dimensionless parameter), in excellent agreement with calculations from the exact Vlasov-Poisson theory, thus providing a complete and detailed characterization of all the stages of the expansion.
