Following the discovery of superconductivity in an iron-based arsenide LaO1-xFxFeAs with a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 26 K[1], Tc was pushed up surprisingly to above 40 K by either applying pressure[2] or replacing La with Sm[3], Ce[4], Nd[5] and Pr[6]. The maximum Tc has climbed to 55 K, observed in SmO1-xFxFeAs[7, 8] and SmFeAsO1-x[9]. The value of Tc was found to increase with decreasing lattice parameters in LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln stands for the lanthanide elements) at an apparently optimal doping level. However, the F- doping in GdFeAsO is particularly difficult[10,11] due to the lattice mismatch between the Gd2O2 layers and Fe2As2 layers. Here we report observation of superconductivity with Tc as high as 56 K by the Th4+ substitution for Gd3+ in GdFeAsO. The incorporation of relatively large Th4+ ions relaxes the lattice mismatch, hence induces the high temperature superconductivity.

To explore the origin of the unusual non-bulk superconductivity with a Tc up to 49 K reported in the rare-earth-doped CaFe2As2 , the chemical composition, magnetization, specific heat, resistivity, and annealing effect are systematically investigated on nominal (Ca1-xRx)Fe2As2 single crystals with different xs and R = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd. All display a doping-independent Tc once superconductivity is induced, a doping-dependent low field superconducting volume fraction f, and a large magnetic anisotropy {eta} in the superconducting state, suggesting a rather inhomogeneous superconducting state in an otherwise microscale-homogenous superconductor. The wavelength dispersive spectroscopy and specific heat show the presence of defects which are closely related to f, regardless of the R involved. The magnetism further reveals that the defects are mainly superparamagnetic clusters for R = Ce, Pr, and Nd with strong intercluster interactions, implying that defects are locally self-organized. Annealing at 500 {deg}C, without varying the doping level x, suppresses f profoundly but not the Tc. The above observations provide evidence for the crucial role of defects in the occurrence of the unusually high Tc ~ 49 K in (Ca1-xRx)Fe2As2 and are consistent with the interface-enhanced superconductivity recently proposed.

We synthesized the samples Sr$_{1-x}$Sm$_x$FFeAs with ZrCuSiAs-type structure. These samples were characterized by resistivity and susceptibility. It is found that substitution of rare earth metal for alkaline earth metal in this system suppresses th e anomaly in resistivity and induces superconductivity. Superconductivity at 56 K in nominal composition Sr$_{0.5}$Sm$_{0.5}$FFeAs is realized, indicating that the superconducting transition temperatures in the iron arsenide fluorides can reach as high as that in oxypnictides with the same structure.
Polycrystalline sample FeSe was synthesized by a self-flux solution method which shows a zero resistance temperature up to 10.9 K and a Tconset (90% rhon, rhon: normal state resistivity) up to 13.3 K. The decrease of superconducting transition temper ature by heat treatment indicates that internal crystallographic strain which plays the same effect as external pressure is the origin of its high Tc. The fluctuation conductivity was studied which could be well described by 3D Aslamazov-Larkin (AL) power law. The estimated value of coherence length xic=9.2 AA is larger than the distance between conducting layers (~6.0 AA), indicating the three-dimensional nature of superconductivity in this compound.
The discovery of high-temperature conventional superconductivity in H3S with a critical temperature of Tc=203 K was followed by the recent record of Tc ~250 K in the face-centered cubic (fcc) lanthanum hydride LaH10 compound. It was realized in a new class of hydrogen-dominated compounds having a clathrate-like crystal structure in which hydrogen atoms form a 3D framework and surround a host atom of rare earth elements. Yttrium hydrides are predicted to have even higher Tc exceeding room temperature. In this paper, we synthesized and refined the crystal structure of new hydrides: YH4, YH6, and YH9 at pressures up to 237 GPa finding that YH4 crystalizes in the I4/mmm lattice, YH6 in Im-3m lattice and YH9 in P63/mmc lattice in excellent agreement with the calculations. The observed very high-temperature superconductivity is comparable to that found in fcc-LaH10: the pressure dependence of Tc for YH9 also displays a dome like shape with the highest Tc of 243 K at 201 GPa. We also observed a Tc of 227 K at 237 GPa for the YH6 phase. However, the measured Tcs are notably lower by ~30 K than predicted. Evidence for superconductivity includes the observation of zero electrical resistance, a decrease of Tc under an external magnetic field and an isotope effect. The theoretically predicted fcc YH10 with the promising highest Tc>300 K was not stabilized in our experiments under pressures up to 237 GPa.

A new hight Tc Fe-based compound system, AFe2As2 with A = K, Cs, K/Sr and Cs/Sr has been found. Through electron-doping, Tc of the A = K and Cs compounds rises to ~37 K, and finally enter a spin-density-wave state (SDW) through further electron dopin g with Sr. The observation demonstrates the crucial role of the (FeAs)-layers in the superconductivity in the Fe-based layered system and the special feature of elemental A-layers in this complex chemical system may provide new avenues to superconductivity at a higher Tc.
