This paper studies the properties of a new lower bound for the natural pseudo-distance. The natural pseudo-distance is a dissimilarity measure between shapes, where a shape is viewed as a topological space endowed with a real-valued continuous function. Measuring dissimilarity amounts to minimizing the change in the functions due to the application of homeomorphisms between topological spaces, with respect to the $L_infty$-norm. In order to obtain the lower bound, a suitable metric between size functions, called matching distance, is introduced. It compares size functions by solving an optimal matching problem between countable point sets. The matching distance is shown to be resistant to perturbations, implying that it is always smaller than the natural pseudo-distance. We also prove that the lower bound so obtained is sharp and cannot be improved by any other distance between size functions.

Some new results about multidimensional Topological Persistence are presented, proving that the discontinuity points of a k-dimensional size function are necessarily related to the pseudocritical or special values of the associated measuring function.
Comparison between multidimensional persistent Betti numbers is often based on the multidimensional matching distance. While this metric is rather simple to define and compute by considering a suitable family of filtering functions associated with li nes having a positive slope, it has two main drawbacks. First, it forgets the natural link between the homological properties of filtrations associated with lines that are close to each other. As a consequence, part of the interesting homological information is lost. Second, its intrinsically discontinuous definition makes it difficult to study its properties. In this paper we introduce a new matching distance for 2D persistent Betti numbers, called coherent matching distance and based on matchings that change coherently with the filtrations we take into account. Its definition is not trivial, as it must face the presence of monodromy in multidimensional persistence, i.e. the fact that different paths in the space parameterizing the above filtrations can induce different matchings between the associated persistent diagrams. In our paper we prove that the coherent 2D matching distance is well-defined and stable.
Given two shapes $A$ and $B$ in the plane with Hausdorff distance $1$, is there a shape $S$ with Hausdorff distance $1/2$ to and from $A$ and $B$? The answer is always yes, and depending on convexity of $A$ and/or $B$, $S$ may be convex, connected, o r disconnected. We show that our result can be generalised to give an interpolated shape between $A$ and $B$ for any interpolation variable $alpha$ between $0$ and $1$, and prove that the resulting morph has a bounded rate of change with respect to $alpha$. Finally, we explore a generalization of the concept of a Hausdorff middle to more than two input sets. We show how to approximate or compute this middle shape, and that the properties relating to the connectedness of the Hausdorff middle extend from the case with two input sets. We also give bounds on the Hausdorff distance between the middle set and the input.
This paper proves that in Size Theory the comparison of multidimensional size functions can be reduced to the 1-dimensional case by a suitable change of variables. Indeed, we show that a foliation in half-planes can be given, such that the restrictio n of a multidimensional size function to each of these half-planes turns out to be a classical size function in two scalar variables. This leads to the definition of a new distance between multidimensional size functions, and to the proof of their stability with respect to that distance.
We describe a new data structure for dynamic nearest neighbor queries in the plane with respect to a general family of distance functions. These include $L_p$-norms and additively weighted Euclidean distances. Our data structure supports general (con vex, pairwise disjoint) sites that have constant description complexity (e.g., points, line segments, disks, etc.). Our structure uses $O(n log^3 n)$ storage, and requires polylogarithmic update and query time, improving an earlier data structure of Agarwal, Efrat and Sharir that required $O(n^varepsilon)$ time for an update and $O(log n)$ time for a query [SICOMP, 1999]. Our data structure has numerous applications. In all of them, it gives faster algorithms, typically reducing an $O(n^varepsilon)$ factor in the previous bounds to polylogarithmic. In addition, we give here two new applications: an efficient construction of a spanner in a disk intersection graph, and a data structure for efficient connectivity queries in a dynamic disk graph.
