The formalism for exactly calculating the retarded and advanced Greens functions of strongly correlated lattice models in a uniform electric field is derived within dynamical mean-field theory. To illustrate the method, we solve for the nonequilibrium density of states of the Hubbard model in both the metallic and Mott insulating phases at half-filling (with an arbitrary strength electric field) by employing the numerical renormalization group as the impurity solver. This general approach can be applied to any strongly correlated lattice model in the limit of large dimensions.

A numerical approach is presented that allows to compute nonequilibrium steady state properties of strongly correlated quantum many-body systems. The method is imbedded in the Keldysh Greens function formalism and is based upon the idea of the variat ional cluster approach as far as the treatment of strong correlations is concerned. It appears that the variational aspect is crucial as it allows for a suitable optimization of a reference system to the nonequilibrium target state. The approach is neither perturbative in the many-body interaction nor in the field, that drives the system out of equilibrium, and it allows to study strong perturbations and nonlinear responses of systems in which also the correlated region is spatially extended. We apply the presented approach to non-linear transport across a strongly correlated quantum wire described by the fermionic Hubbard model. We illustrate how the method bridges to cluster dynamical mean-field theory upon coupling two baths containing and increasing number of uncorrelated sites.
We present a systematic study of the nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) in Mott insulators driven by DC or AC electric fields, based on the Floquet dynamical mean-field theory. The results are analyzed using a generalized tunneling formula for the c urrent, which is reminiscent of the Meir-Wingreen formula and provides insights into the relevant physical processes. In the DC case, the spectrum of the NESSs exhibits Wannier-Stark (WS) states associated with the lower and upper Hubbard bands. In addition, there emerge WS sidebands from many-body states. Using the tunneling formula, we demonstrate that the tunneling between these WS states leads to peaks or humps in the induced DC current. In the AC case, we cover a wide parameter range of excitation frequencies and field strengths to clarify the crossover from field-induced tunneling behavior in the DC limit to nonequilibrium states dominated by multiphoton absorption in the AC limit. In the crossover regime, the single-particle spectrum is characterized by a coexistence of Floquet sidebands and WS peaks, and the current and double occupation exhibits a nontrivial dependence on the field strength. The tunneling formula works quantitatively well even in the AC case, and we use it to discuss the potential cooperation of tunneling and multi-photon processes in the crossover regime. We present a robust scheme to derive effective models non-perturbatively for quantum lattice models when at least one degree of freedom is gapped. A combination of graph theory and the method of continuous unitary transformations (gCUTs) is shown to efficiently capture all zero-temperature fluctuations in a controlled spatial range. The gCUT can be used either for effective quasi-particle descriptions or for effective low-energy descriptions in case of infinitely degenerate subspaces. We illustrate the method for 1d and 2d lattice models yielding convincing results in the thermodynamic limit. We find that the recently discovered spin liquid in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice lies outside the perturbative strong-coupling regime. Various extensions and perspectives of the gCUT are discussed.
We have proposed a novel numerical method to calculate accurately the physical quantities of the ground state with the tensor-network wave function in two dimensions. We determine the tensor network wavefunction by a projection approach which applies iteratively the Trotter-Suzuki decomposition of the projection operator and the singular value decomposition of matrix. The norm of the wavefunction and the expectation value of a physical observable are evaluated by a coarse grain renormalization group approach. Our method allows a tensor-network wavefunction with a high bond degree of freedom (such as D=8) to be handled accurately and efficiently in the thermodynamic limit. For the Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice, our results for the ground state energy and the staggered magnetization agree well with those obtained by the quantum Monte Carlo and other approaches.

We present an exact solution of an experimentally realizable and strongly interacting one-dimensional spin system which is a limiting case of a quantum Ising model with long range interaction in a transverse and longitudinal field. Pronounced quantum fluctuations lead to a strongly correlated liquid ground state. For open boundary conditions the ground state manifold consists of four degenerate sectors whose quantum numbers are determined by the orientation of the edge spins. Explicit expressions for the entanglement properties, the excitation gap as well as the exact wave functions for a couple of excited states are analytically derived and discussed.
