We consider a SU(5) x U(1)_F GUT-flavor model in which the number of effects that determine the charged fermions Yukawa matrices is much larger than the number of observables, resulting in a hierarchical fermion spectrum with no particular regularities. The GUT-flavor symmetry is broken by flavons in the adjoint of SU(5), realizing a variant of the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism that gives rise to a large number of effective operators. By assuming a common mass for the heavy fields and universality of the fundamental Yukawa couplings, we reduce the number of free parameters to one. The observed fermion mass spectrum is reproduced thanks to selection rules that discriminate among various contributions. Bottom-tau Yukawa unification is preserved at leading order, but there is no unification for the first two families. Interestingly, U(1)_F charges alone do not determine the hierarchy, and can only give upper bounds on the parametric suppression of the Yukawa operators.

Supersymmetric SU(5) GUT augmented with anomaly free U(1)_F flavor symmetry is presented. Very economical field content and U(1)_F charge assignment are obtained by specific construction. In particular, three families of 10+5* chiral matter, along th e SU(5) singlet states (some of which serve as right handed neutrinos) are obtained. Appealing texture zero Yukawa matrices provide natural understanding of hierarchies between charged fermion masses and mixings. The model predicts inverted hierarchical neutrino mass scenario with interesting implications.
Motivated by experimental measurements indicating deviations from the Standard Model predictions we discuss F-theory inspired models, which, in addition to the three chiral generations contain a vector-like complete fermion family. The analysis takes place in the context of $SU(5)times U(1)$ GUT embedded in an $E_8$ covering group which is associated with the (highest) geometric singularity of the elliptic fibration. In this context, the $U(1)$ is a linear combination of four abelian factors subjected to appropriate anomaly cancellation conditions. Furthermore, we require universal $U(1)$ charges for the three chiral families and different ones for the corresponding fields of the vector-like representations. Under the aforementioned assumptions, we find 192 such models which can be classified into five distinct categories with respect to their specific GUT properties. We exhibit representative examples for each such class and construct the superpotential couplings and the fermion mass matrices. We explore the implications of the vector-like states in low energy phenomenology including the predictions regarding the B-meson anomalies. The r^ole of R-parity violating terms appearing in some particular models of the above construction is also discussed.
In string compactifications, frequently there appears the anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry which belonged to E8$times$E8 of the heterotic string. This anomalous U(1) gauge boson obtains mass at the compactification scale, just below $10^{18,}$GeV, by ab sorbing one pseudoscalar (corresponding to the model-independent axion) from the second rank anti-symmetric tensor field $B_{MN}$. Below the compactification scale, there results a global symmetry U(1)$_{rm anom}$ whose charge $Q_{rm anom}$ is the original gauge U(1) charge. This is the most natural global symmetry, realizing the invisible axion. This global symmetry U(1)$_{rm anom}$ is suitable for a flavor symmetry. In the simplest compactification model with the flipped SU(5) grand unification, we calculate all the low energy parameters in terms of the vacuum expectation values of the standard model singlets.

In this talk, I present a new framework to understand the long-standing fermion mass hierarchy puzzle. We extend the Standard Model gauge symmetry by an extra local U(1)_S symmetry, broken spontaneously at the electroweak scale. All the SM particles are singlet with respect to this U(1)_S. We also introduce additional flavor symmetries, U(1)_Fs, with flavon scalars F_i, as well as vectorlike quarks and leptons at the TeV scale. The flavon scalars have VEV in the TeV scale. Only the top quark has the usual dimension four Yukawa coupling. EW symmetry breaking to all other quarks and leptons are propagated through the messenger field, S through their interactions involving the heavy vector-like fermions and S, as well as through their interactions involving the vector-like fermions and F_i. In addition the explaining the hierarchy of the charged fermion masses and mixings, the model has several interesting predictions for Higgs decays, flavor changing neutral current processes in the top and the b quark decays, decays of the new singlet scalars to the new Z boson, as well as productions of the new vectorlike quarks. These predictions can be tested at the LHC.
We propose an extension of the three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM), where the Standard Model (SM) particle content is enlarged by the inclusion of two inert $SU(2)$ scalar doublets, two inert electrically neutral gauge singlet scalars, charged vector li ke fermions and Majorana neutrinos. These additional particles are introduced to generate the SM fermion mass hierarchy from a sequential loop suppression mechanism. In our model the top and exotic fermion masses appear at tree level, whereas the remaining fermions get their masses radiatively. Specifically, bottom, charm, tau and muon masses appear at 1-loop; the masses for the light up, down and strange quarks as well as for the electron at 2-loop and masses for the light active neutrinos at 3-loop. Our model successfully accounts for SM fermion masses and mixings and accommodates the observed Dark Matter relic density, the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments, as well the constraints arising from charged lepton flavor violating processes. Analyzing the electroweak symmetry breaking, we use a method based on bilinears for the case of three doublets and additional singlets. The proposed model predicts charged lepton flavor violating decays within the reach of forthcoming experiments.
