During its late orbital mission at Jupiter the Galileo spacecraft made two passages through the giant planets gossamer ring system. The impact-ionization dust detector on board successfully recorded dust impacts during both ring passages and provided the first in-situ measurements from a dusty planetary ring. In all, a few thousand dust impacts were counted with the instrument accumulators during both ring passages, but only a total of 110 complete data sets of dust impacts were transmitted to Earth. Detected particle sizes range from about 0.2 to 5 micron, extending the known size distribution by an order of magnitude towards smaller particles than previously derived from optical imaging (Showalter et al. 2008). The grain size distribution increases towards smaller particles and shows an excess of these tiny motes in the Amalthea gossamer ring compared to the Thebe ring. The size distribution for the Amalthea ring derived from our in-situ measurements for the small grains agrees very well with the one obtained from images for large grains. Our analysis shows that particles contributing most to the optical cross-section are about 5 micron in radius, in agreement with imaging results. The measurements indicate a large drop in particle flux immediately interior to Thebes orbit and some detected particles seem to be on highly-tilted orbits with inclinations up to 20 deg.

We present the mass distribution of interstellar grains measured in situ by the Galileo and Ulysses spaceprobes as cumulative flux. The derived in situ mass distribution per logarithmic size interval is compared to the distribution determined by fitt ing extinction measurements. Large grains measured in situ contribute significantly to the overall mass of dust in the local interstellar cloud. The problem of a dust-to-gas mass ratio that contradicts cosmic abundances is discussed.
Observations have confirmed the existence of multiple-planet systems containing a hot Jupiter and smaller planetary companions. Examples include WASP-47, Kepler-730, and TOI-1130. We examine the plausibility of forming such systems in situ using $N$- body simulations that include a realistic treatment of collisions, an evolving protoplanetary disc and eccentricity/inclination damping of planetary embryos. Initial conditions are constructed using two different models for the core of the giant planet: a seed-model and an equal-mass-model. The former has a more massive protoplanet placed among multiple small embryos in a compact configuration. The latter consists only of equal-mass embryos. Simulations of the seed-model lead to the formation of systems containing a hot Jupiter and super-Earths. The evolution consistently follows four distinct phases: early giant impacts; runaway gas accretion onto the seed protoplanet; disc damping-dominated evolution of the embryos orbiting exterior to the giant; a late chaotic phase after dispersal of the gas disc. Approximately 1% of the equal-mass simulations form a giant and follow the same four-phase evolution. Synthetic transit observations of the equal-mass simulations provide an occurrence rate of 0.26% for systems containing a hot Jupiter and an inner super-Earth, similar to the 0.2% occurrence rate from actual transit surveys, but simulated hot Jupiters are rarely detected as single transiting planets, in disagreement with observations. A subset of our simulations form two close-in giants, similar to the WASP-148 system. The scenario explored here provides a viable pathway for forming systems with unusual architectures, but does not apply to the majority of hot Jupiters.
Many warm Jupiters (WJs) have substantial eccentricities, which are linked to their formation and migration histories. This paper explores eccentricity excitation of WJs due to planet-planet scattering, beginning with 3-4 planets in unstable orbits, with the innermost planet placed in the range (0.1 - 1)AU. Such a setup is consistent with either in-situ formation or arrival at sub-AU orbits due to disk migration. Most previous N-body experiments have focused on cold Jupiters at several AU, where scattering results in planet ejections, efficiently exciting the eccentricities of surviving planets. In contrast, scattering at sub-AU distances results in a mixture of collisions and ejections, and the final eccentricities of surviving planets are unclear. We conduct scattering experiments for a range of planet masses and initial spacings, including the effect of general relativistic apsidal precession, and systematically catalogue the scattering outcomes and properties of surviving planets. A comparable number of one-planet and two-planet systems are produced. Two-planet systems arise exclusively through planet-planet collisions, and tend to have low eccentricities/mutual inclinations and compact configurations. One-planet systems arise through a combination of ejections and collisions, resulting in higher eccentricities. The observed eccentricity distribution of solitary WJs (lacking detection of a giant planet companion) is consistent with roughly 60% of the systems having undergone in-situ scattering, and the remaining experiencing a quiescent history.
The cuprates and iron-based high-temperature superconductors share many common features: layered strongly anisotropic crystal structure, strong electronic correlations, interplay between different types of electronic ordering, the intrinsic spatial i nhomogeneity due to doping. The understanding of complex interplay between these factors is crucial for a directed search of new high-temperature superconductors. Here we show the appearance of inhomogeneous gossamer superconductivity in bulk FeSe compound at ambient pressure and at temperature 5 times higher than its zero-resistance $T_c$. This discovery helps to understand numerous remarkable superconducting properties of FeSe. We also find and prove a general property: if inhomogeneous superconductivity in a anisotropic conductor first appears in the form of isolated superconducting islands, it reduces electric resistivity anisotropically with maximal effect along the least conducting axis. This gives a simple and very general tool to detect inhomogeneous superconductivity in anisotropic compounds, which is critically important to study the onset of high-temperature superconductivity.
The in-situ detection of interstellar dust grains in the Solar System by the dust instruments on-board the Ulysses and Galileo spacecraft as well as the recent measurements of hyperbolic radar meteors give information on the properties of the interst ellar solid particle population in the solar vicinity. Especially the distribution of grain masses is indicative of growth and destruction mechanisms that govern the grain evolution in the interstellar medium. The mass of an impacting dust grain is derived from its impact velocity and the amount of plasma generated by the impact. Because the initial velocity and the dynamics of interstellar particles in the Solar System are well known, we use an approximated theoretical instead of the measured impact velocity to derive the mass of interstellar grains from the Ulysses and Galileo in-situ data. The revised mass distributions are steeper and thus contain less large grains than the ones that use measured impact velocities, but large grains still contribute significantly to the overall mass of the detected grains. The flux of interstellar grains with masses $> 10^{-14} {rm kg}$ is determined to be $1cdot 10^{-6} {rm m}^{-2} {rm s}^{-1}$. The comparison of radar data with the extrapolation of the Ulysses and Galileo mass distribution indicates that the very large ($m > 10^{-10} {rm kg}$) hyperbolic meteoroids detected by the radar are not kinematically related to the interstellar dust population detected by the spacecraft.
