We investigate the effects of the adiabatic loading of optical lattices to the temperature by applying the mean-field approximation to the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at finite temperatures. We compute the lattice-height dependence of the isentropic curves for the given initial temperatures in case of the homogeneous system i.e., neglecting the trapping potential. Taking the unit of temperatures as the recoil energy, the adiabatic cooling/heating through superfluid (SF) - normal (N) phase transition is clearly understood. It is found that the cooling occurs in SF phase while the heating occurs in N phase and the efficiency of adibatic cooling/heating is higher at higher temperatures. We also explain how its behavior can be understood from the lattice-hight dependence of dispersion relation in each phase. Furthermore, the connection of the adiabatic heating/cooling between the cases with/without the trapping potential is discussed.

We review the superfluid to Mott-insulator transition of cold atoms in optical lattices. The experimental signatures of the transition are discussed and the RPA theory of the Bose-Hubbard model briefly described. We point out that the critical behavi or at the transition, as well as the prediction by the RPA theory of a gapped mode (besides the Bogoliubov sound mode) in the superfluid phase, are difficult to understand from the Bogoliubov theory. On the other hand, these findings appear to be intimately connected to the non-trivial infrared behavior of the superfluid phase as recently studied within the non-perturbative renormalization group.

We study the effects of spin-orbit coupling on the Mott-superfluid transition of bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We determine the strong coupling magnetic phase diagram by a combination of exact analytic and numerical means. Smooth evolu tion of the magnetic structure into the superfluid phases are investigated with the density matrix renormalization group technique. Novel magnetic phases are uncovered and phase transitions between them within the superfluid regime are discussed. Possible experimental detection are discussed.
In this paper we study the superfluid-Mott-insulator phase transition of ultracold dilute gas of bosonic atoms in an optical lattice by means of Green function method and Bogliubov transformation as well. The superfluid- Mott-insulator phase transiti on condition is determined by the energy-band structure with an obvious interpretation of the transition mechanism. Moreover the superfluid phase is explained explicitly from the energy spectrum derived in terms of Bogliubov approach.
Ultracold fermionic alkaline earth atoms confined in optical lattices realize Hubbard models with internal SU(N) symmetries, where N can be as large as ten. Such systems are expected to harbor exotic magnetic physics at temperatures below the superex change energy scale. Employing quantum Monte Carlo simulations to access the low-temperature regime, we show that after adiabatically loading a weakly interacting gas into the strongly interacting regime of an optical lattice, the final temperature decreases with increasing N. Furthermore, we estimate the temperature scale required to probe correlations associated with low-temperature SU(N) magnetism. Our findings are encouraging for the exploration of exotic large-N magnetic states in ongoing experiments.

We investigate the superfluid--Mott-insulator quantum phase transition of spin-1 bosons in an optical lattice created by pairs of counterpropagating linearly polarized laser beams, driving an $F_g=1$ to $F_e=1$ internal atomic transition. The whole p arameter space of the resulting two-component Bose-Hubbard model is studied. We find that the phase transition is not always second order as in the case of spinless bosons, but can be first order in certain regions of the parameter space. The calculations are done in the mean-field approximation by means of exact numerical diagonalization as well as within the framework of perturbaton theory.
