We present the redshift distribution of a complete, unbiased sample of 24 micron sources down to fnu(24 micron) = 300 uJy (5-sigma). The sample consists of 591 sources detected in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. We have obtained optical spectroscopic redshifts for 421 sources (71%). These have a redshift distribution peaking at z~0.3, with a possible additional peak at z~0.9, and objects detected out to z=4.5. The spectra of the remaining 170 (29%) exhibit no strong emission lines from which to determine a redshift. We develop an algorithm to estimate the redshift distribution of these sources, based on the assumption that they have emission lines but that these lines are not observable due to the limited wavelength coverage of our spectroscopic observations. The redshift distribution derived from all 591 sources exhibits an additional peak of extremely luminous (L(8-1000 micron) > 3 x 10^{12} Lsun) objects at z~2, consisting primarily of sources without observable emission lines. We use optical line diagnostics and IRAC colors to estimate that 55% of the sources within this peak are AGN-dominated. We compare our results to published models of the evolution of infrared luminous galaxies. The models which best reproduce our observations predict a large population of star-formation dominated ULIRGs at z > 1.5 rather than the AGN-dominated sources we observe.

We present MAMBO 1.2mm observations of 40 extragalactic sources from the Spitzer First Look Survey that are bright in the mid-infrared (S_24um>1mJy) but optically obscured (log_10 (nu F_nu (24um))/(nu F_nu (0.7um))>1). We use these observations to se arch for cold dust emission, probing the similarity of their spectral energy distributions to star forming infrared galaxies or obscured AGN. The sample as a whole is well detected at mean S_1.2mm=0.74+-0.09mJy and S_1.2mm/S_24um=0.15+-0.03. Seven (three) of the sources are individually detected at >3sigma (>5sigma) levels. Mean millimeter fluxes are higher for sources with the reddest mid-infrared/optical colors. Optically faint but with relatively low mm to mid-infrared ratio, the typical SEDs are inconsistent with redshifted SED shapes of local star-forming infrared galaxies. They also differ from SEDs of typical submillimeter selected galaxies, with the 24um sources that are individually detected by MAMBO possibly representing intermediate objects. Compared to star-forming galaxies, a stronger but optically obscured mid-infrared component without associated strong far-infrared emission has to be included. This component may be due to luminous optically obscured AGN, which would represent a significant part of the high redshift AGN population.

We present a spectroscopic survey using the MMT/Hectospec fiber spectrograph of 24 micron sources selected with the Spitzer Space Telescope in the Spitzer First Look Survey. We report 1296 new redshifts for 24 micron sources, including 599 with f(24m icron) > 1 mJy. Combined with 291 additional redshifts for sources from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), our observing program was highly efficient and is ~90% complete for i < 21 mag and f(24micron) > 1 mJy, and is 35% complete for i < 20.5 mag and 0.3 mJy < f(24micron) < 1 mJy. Our Hectospec survey includes 1078 and 168 objects spectroscopically classified as galaxies and QSOs, respectively. Combining the Hectospec and SDSS samples, we find 24 micron-selected galaxies to z < 0.98 and QSOs to z < 3.6, with mean redshifts of <z(gal)> = 0.27 and <z(QSO)> =1.1. As part of this publication, we include the redshift catalogs and the reduced spectra; these are also available online (http://mips.as.arizona.edu/~papovich/fls) and through the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive (http://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu).
The Spitzer Space Telescope has undertaken the deepest ever observations of the 24 micron sky in the ELAIS-N1 field as part of GOODS Science Verification observations. We present the shape of the 24 micron source counts in the flux range 20-1000 micr oJy, discuss the redshift distribution and nature of these sources with particular emphasis on their near-infrared counterparts.

The comparison between the new Spitzer data at 24 micron and the previous ISOCAM data at 15 micron is a key tool to understand galaxy properties and evolution in the infrared and to interpret the observed number counts, since the combination of Spitz er with the ISO cosmological surveys provides for the first time the direct view of the Universe in the Infrared up to z~2. We present the prediction in the Spitzer 24-micron band of a phenomenological model for galaxy evolution derived from the 15-micron data. Without any ``a posteriori update, the model predictions seem to agree well with the recently published 24-micron extragalactic source counts, suggesting that the peak in the 24-micron counts is dominated by ``starburst galaxies like those detected by ISOCAM at 15 micron, but at higher redshifts (1 < z < 2 instead of 0.5 < z < 1.5).

We present 24 micron images of three protoplanetary disks being photoevaporated around high mass O type stars. These objects have ``cometary structure where the dust pulled away from the disk by the photoevaporating flow is forced away from the O sta r by photon pressure on the dust and heating and ionization of the gas. Models of the 24 micron and 8 micron brightness profiles agree with this hypothesis. These models show that the mass-loss rate needed to sustain such a configuration is in agreement with or somewhat less than the theoretical predictions for the photoevaporation process.
