We have measured a strictly linear pi-plasmon dispersion along the axis of individualized single wall carbon nanotubes, which is completely different from plasmon dispersions of graphite or bundled single wall carbon nanotubes. Comparative ab initio studies on graphene based systems allow us to reproduce the different dispersions. This suggests that individualized nanotubes provide viable experimental access to collective electronic excitations of graphene, and it validates the use of graphene to understand electronic excitations of carbon nanotubes. In particular, the calculations reveal that local field effects (LFE) cause a mixing of electronic transitions, including the Dirac cone, resulting in the observed linear dispersion.

The possibility of low-energy surface plasmon amplification by optically excited excitons in small-diameter single wall carbon nanotubes is theoretically demonstrated. The nonradiative exciton-plasmon energy transfer causes the buildup of the macrosc opic population numbers of coherent localized surface plasmons associated with high-intensity coherent local fields formed at nanoscale throughout the nanotube surface. These strong local fields can be used in a variety of new optoelectronic applications of carbon nanotubes, including near-field nonlinear-optical probing and sensing, optical switching, enhanced electromagnetic absorption, and materials nanoscale modification.
We show that non-damped acoustic plasmons exist in single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and propose that the non-damped acoustic plasmons may mediate electron-electron attraction and result in superconductivity in the SWCNT. The superconducting trans ition temperature Tc for the SWCNT (3,3) obtained by this mechanism agrees with the recent experimental result (Z. K. Tang et al, Science 292, 2462(2001)). We also show that it is possible to get higher Tc up to 99 K by doping the SWCNT (5,5).

A comprehensive theory of electron spin resonance (ESR) for a Luttinger liquid (LL) state of correlated metals is presented. The ESR measurables such as the signal intensity and the line-width are calculated in the framework of Luttinger liquid theor y with broken spin rotational symmetry as a function of magnetic field and temperature. We obtain a significant temperature dependent homogeneous line-broadening which is related to the spin symmetry breaking and the electron-electron interaction. The result crosses over smoothly to the ESR of itinerant electrons in the non-interacting limit. These findings explain the absence of the long-sought ESR signal of itinerant electrons in single-wall carbon nanotubes when considering realistic experimental conditions.
A low energy theory of suspended carbon nanotube quantum dots in weak tunnelling coupling with metallic leads is presented. The focus is put on the dependence of the spectrum and the Franck-Condon factors on the geometry of the junction including sev eral vibronic modes. The relative size and the relative position of the dot and its associated vibrons strongly influence the electromechanical properties of the system. A detailed analysis of the complete parameters space reveals different regimes: in the short vibron regime the tunnelling of an electron into the nanotube generates a plasmon-vibron excitation while in the long vibron regime polaron excitations dominate the scenario. The small, position dependent Franck-Condon couplings of the small vibron regime convert into uniform, large couplings in the long vibron regime. Selection rules for the excitations of the different plasmon-vibron modes via electronic tunnelling events are also derived.

The hybrid orbitals of single-wall carbon nanotubes are given according to the structure of the nanotube. Because the energy levels of these hybrid orbitals are close to each other, the sigma-orbitals will affect the behavior of the pi-electrons, whi ch is called the scattering of pi- electrons. This scattering effect is taken into account in the nanotube and the local wave function of pi-electrons is constructed, which is called the extended Wannier function. In the Wannier representation, the electronic hopping energies and the energy gap of the tubes (9,0) and (9,9) are calculated. Our results show that the band gap of the tubes increases in direct ratio with the scattering coefficients of sigma-orbitals and this scattering is able to enhance the localization of pi-electrons.
