Recent advances in manipulating single electron spins in quantum dots have brought us close to the realization of classical logic gates based on representing binary bits in spin polarizations of single electrons. Here, we show that a linear array of three quantum dots, each containing a single spin polarized electron, and with nearest neighbor exchange coupling, acts as the universal NAND gate. The energy dissipated during switching this gate is the Landauer-Shannon limit of kTln(1/p) [T = ambient temperature and p = intrinsic gate error probability]. With present day technology, p = 1E-9 is achievable above 1 K temperature. Even with this small intrinsic error probability, the energy dissipated during switching the NAND gate is only ~ 21 kT, while todays nanoscale transistors dissipate about 40,000 - 50,000 kT when they switch.

We propose a novel hybrid single-electron device for reprogrammable low-power logic operations, the magnetic single-electron transistor (MSET). The device consists of an aluminium single-electron transistors with a GaMnAs magnetic back-gate. Changing between different logic gate functions is realized by reorienting the magnetic moments of the magnetic layer which induce a voltage shift on the Coulomb blockade oscillations of the MSET. We show that we can arbitrarily reprogram the function of the device from an n-type SET for in-plane magnetization of the GaMnAs layer to p-type SET for out-of-plane magnetization orientation. Moreover, we demonstrate a set of reprogrammable Boolean gates and its logical complement at the single device level. Finally, we propose two sets of reconfigurable binary gates using combinations of two MSETs in a pull-down network.
The idea of nanomagnetic Boolean logic was advanced more than two decades ago. It envisaged the use of nanomagnets with two stable magnetization orientations as the primitive binary switch for implementing logic gates and ultimately combinational/seq uential circuits. Enthusiastic proclamations of how nanomagnetic logic will eclipse traditional (transistor-based) logic circuits proliferated the applied physics literature. Two decades later there is not a single viable nanomagnetic logic chip in sight, let alone one that is a commercial success. In this perspective article, I offer my reasons on why this has come to pass. I present a realistic and tempered vision of nanomagnetic logic, pointing out many misconceptions about this paradigm, flaws in some proposals that appeared in the literature, shortcomings, and likely pitfalls that might stymie progress in this field.
Quantum computation requires many qubits that can be coherently controlled and coupled to each other. Qubits that are defined using lithographic techniques are often argued to be promising platforms for scalability, since they can be implemented usin g semiconductor fabrication technology. However, leading solid-state approaches function only at temperatures below 100 mK, where cooling power is extremely limited, and this severely impacts the perspective for practical quantum computation. Recent works on spins in silicon have shown steps towards a platform that can be operated at higher temperatures by demonstrating long spin lifetimes, gate-based spin readout, and coherent single-spin control, but the crucial two-qubit logic gate has been missing. Here we demonstrate that silicon quantum dots can have sufficient thermal robustness to enable the execution of a universal gate set above one Kelvin. We obtain single-qubit control via electron-spin-resonance (ESR) and readout using Pauli spin blockade. We show individual coherent control of two qubits and measure single-qubit fidelities up to 99.3 %. We demonstrate tunability of the exchange interaction between the two spins from 0.5 up to 18 MHz and use this to execute coherent two-qubit controlled rotations (CROT). The demonstration of `hot and universal quantum logic in a semiconductor platform paves the way for quantum integrated circuits hosting the quantum hardware and their control circuitry all on the same chip, providing a scalable approach towards practical quantum information.

In this article we investigate the notion and basic properties of Boolean algebras and prove the Stones representation theorem. The relations of Boolean algebras to logic and to set theory will be studied and, in particular, a neat proof of completen ess theorem in propositional logic will be given using Stones theorem from Boolean algebra.
We study, both theoretically and experimentally, driven Rabi oscillations of a single electron spin coupled to a nuclear spin bath. Due to the long correlation time of the bath, two unusual features are observed in the oscillations. The decay follows a power law, and the oscillations are shifted in phase by a universal value of ~pi/4. These properties are well understood from a theoretical expression that we derive here in the static limit for the nuclear bath. This improved understanding of the coupled electron-nuclear system is important for future experiments using the electron spin as a qubit.
