Extended Red Emission (ERE) was recently attributed to the photo-luminescence of either doubly ionized Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH$^{++}$), or charged PAH dimers. We analysed the visible and mid-infrared (mid-IR) dust emission in the North-West and South photo-dissociation regions of the reflection nebula NGC 7023.Using a blind signal separation method, we extracted the map of ERE from images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, and at the Canada France Hawaii Telescope. We compared the extracted ERE image to the distribution maps of the mid-IR emission of Very Small Grains (VSGs), neutral and ionized PAHs (PAH$^0$ and PAH$^+$) obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Infrared Space Observatory. ERE is dominant in transition regions where VSGs are being photo-evaporated to form free PAH molecules, and is not observed in regions dominated by PAH$^+$. Its carrier makes a minor contribution to the mid-IR emission spectrum. These results suggest that the ERE carrier is a transition species formed during the destruction of VSGs. Singly ionized PAH dimers appear as good candidates but PAH$^{++}$ molecules seem to be excluded.

The carrier of the dust-associated photoluminescence process causing the extended red emission (ERE) in many dusty interstellar environments remains unidentified. Several competing models are more or less able to match the observed broad, unstructure d ERE band. We now constrain the character of the ERE carrier further by determining the wavelengths of the radiation that initiates the ERE. Using the imaging capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope, we have resolved the width of narrow ERE filaments appearing on the surfaces of externally illuminated molecular clouds in the bright reflection nebula NGC 7023 and compared them with the depth of penetration of radiation of known wavelengths into the same cloud surfaces. We identify photons with wavelengths shortward of 118 nm as the source of ERE initiation, not to be confused with ERE excitation, however. There are strong indications from the well-studied ERE in the Red Rectangle nebula and in the high-|b| Galactic cirrus that the photon flux with wavelengths shortward of 118 nm is too small to actually excite the observed ERE, even with 100% quantum efficiency. We conclude, therefore, that ERE excitation results from a two-step process. While none of the previously proposed ERE models can match these new constraints, we note that under interstellar conditions most polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules are ionized to the di-cation stage by photons with E > 10.5 eV and that the electronic energy level structure of PAH di-cations is consistent with fluorescence in the wavelength band of the ERE. Therefore, PAH di-cations deserve further study as potential carriers of the ERE. (abridged)
We present a new 0.9 resolution 3.29 micron narrowband image of the reflection nebula NGC 7023. We find that the 3.29 micron IEF in NGC 7023 is brightest in narrow filaments NW of the illuminating star. These filaments have been seen in images of K, molecular hydrogen emission lines, the 6.2 and 11.3 micron IEFs, and HCO+. We also detect 3.29 micron emission faintly but distinctly between the filaments and the star. The 3.29 micron image is in contrast to narrowband images at 2.09, 2.14, and 2.18 micron, which show an extended emission peak midway between the filaments and the star, and much fainter emission near the filaments. The [2.18]-[3.29] color shows a wide variation, ranging from 3.4-3.6 mag at the 2 micron continuum peak to 5.5 mag in the filaments. We observe [2.18]-[3.29] to increase smoothly with increasing distance from the star, up until the filament, suggesting that the main difference between the spatial distributions of the 2 micron continuum and the the 3.29 micron emission is related to the incident stellar flux. Our result suggests that the 3.29 micron IEF carriers are likely to be distinct from, but related to, the 2 micron continuum emitters. Our finding also imply that, in NGC 7023, the 2 micron continuum emitters are mainly associated with HI, while the 3.29 micron IEF carriers are primarily found in warm molecular hydrogen, but that both can survive in HI or molecular hydrogen. The determination of the physical conditions in molecular clouds is a key step towards our understanding of their formation and evolution of associated star formation. We investigate the density, temperature, and column density of both dust and gas i n the photodissociation regions (PDRs) located at the interface between the atomic and cold molecular gas of the NGC 7023 reflection nebula. We study how young stars affect the gas and dust in their environment. Our approach combining both dust and gas delivers strong constraints on the physical conditions of the PDRs. We find dense and warm molecular gas of high column density in the PDRs.
NGC 7023 is a well-studied reflection nebula, which shows strong emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules in the form of aromatic infrared bands (AIBs). The spectral variations of the AIBs in this region are connected to the chem ical evolution of the PAH molecules which, in turn, depends on the local physical conditions. We use the capabilities of SOFIA to observe a 3.2 x 3.4 region of NGC 7023 at wavelengths that we observe with high spatial resolution (2.7) at 3.3 and 11.2 um. We compare the SOFIA images with existing images of the PAH emission at 8.0 um (Spitzer), emission from evaporating very small grains (eVSG) extracted from Spitzer-IRS spectral cubes, the ERE (HST and CFHT), and H_2 (2.12 um). We create maps of the 11.2/3.3 um ratio to probe the morphology of the PAH size distribution and the 8.0/11.2 um ratio to probe the PAH ionization. We make use of an emission model and of vibrational spectra from the NASA Ames PAHdb to translate the 11.2/3.3 um ratio to PAH sizes. The 11.2/3.3 um map shows the smallest PAH concentrate on the PDR surface (H_2 and extended red emission) in the NW and South PDR. We estimated that PAHs in the NW PDR bear, on average, a number of carbon atoms (N_c) of ~70 in the PDR cavity and ~50 at the PDR surface. In the entire nebula, the results reveal a factor of 2 variation in the size of the PAH. We relate these size variations to several models for the evolution of the PAH families when they traverse from the molecular cloud to the PDR. The PAH size map enables us to follow the photochemical evolution of PAHs in NGC 7023. Small PAHs result from the photo-evaporation of VSGs as they reach the PDR surface. Inside the PDR cavity, the PAH abundance drops as the smallest PAH are broken down. The average PAH size increases in the cavity where only the largest species survive or are converted into C_60 by photochemical processing.

Interstellar dust in nebulae and in the diffuse interstellar medium of galaxies contains a component which responds to illumination by ultraviolet photons with efficient luminescence in the 500 nm to 1000 nm spectral range, known as Extended Red Emis sion (ERE). We review the techniques of detection and the observational characteristics of the ERE in a wide range of astrophysical environments. We then discuss results of the analysis of ERE observations, leading to a set of specific constraints that any proposal for the ERE carrier must confront. Finally, we review specific models that have been advanced over the past two decades to explain the ERE phenomenon. Despite promising progress on several fronts, no completely satisfactory model for the ERE carrier/process exists at this time.
