Scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) measurements find that the surface of Bi-2212 is characterized by nanoscale sized regions, gap patches, which have different magnitudes for the d-wave energy gap. Recent studies have shown that the tunnelling conductance can be fit using a BCS-type density of states for a d-wave superconductor with a local quasiparticle scattering rate. The fit is made with a scattering rate which varies linearly with energy and has a slope that is positively correlated with the local value of the gap. We revisit a model of quasiparticle scattering by impurities and spin fluctuations which was previously used to describe the lifetimes of nodal quasiparticles measured by angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). We argue that the broadening of the local density of states is in general determined by the imaginary part of the self-energy of the system averaged over a small region. The size of this region is set by a mean free path which depends upon the energy. At low energies, this region is found to be significantly larger than a gap patch, so that the density of states measured by STS is homogeneous in this energy range. At higher energies where the mean free path is comparable with the patch size, the density of states is inhomogeneous. We show that a local self-energy in the impurity-plus-spin fluctuation model, while not strictly linear, yields a local density of states (LDOS) nearly identical to the full theory, and argue that it is consistent with the STS data as well as the phenomenological linear scattering rate extracted from experiment. We also explore the qualitative consequences of this phenomenology for the spectral widths observed in ARPES and predict the existence of Fermi arcs in the superconducting state.

We study the dynamical quasiparticle scattering by spin and charge fluctuations in Fe-based pnictides within a five-orbital model with on-site interactions. The leading contribution to the scattering rate is calculated from the second-order diagrams with the polarization operator calculated in the random-phase approximation. We find one-particle scattering rates which are highly anisotropic on each Fermi surface sheet due to the momentum dependence of the spin susceptibility and the multi-orbital composition of each Fermi pocket. This fact, combined with the anisotropy of the effective mass, produces disparity between electrons and holes in conductivity, the Hall coefficient, and the Raman initial slope, in qualitative agreement with experimental data.

We present a theory of quasiparticle Hall transport in strongly type-II superconductors within their vortex state. We establish the existence of integer quantum spin Hall effect in clean unconventional $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductors in the vortex stat e from a general analysis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The spin Hall conductivity $sigma^s_{xy}$ is shown to be quantized in units of $frac{hbar}{8pi}$. This result does not rest on linearization of the BdG equations around Dirac nodes and therefore includes inter-nodal physics in its entirety. In addition, this result holds for a generic inversion-symmetric lattice of vortices as long as the magnetic field $B$ satisfies $H_{c1} ll B ll H_{c2}$. We then derive the Wiedemann-Franz law for the spin and thermal Hall conductivity in the vortex state. In the limit of $T to 0$, the thermal Hall conductivity satisfies $kappa_{x y}=frac{4pi^2}{3}(frac{k_B}{hbar})^2 T sigma^s_{xy}$. The transitions between different quantized values of $sigma^s_{xy}$ as well as relation to conventional superconductors are discussed.
We calculate the density of states of a disordered inhomogeneous d-wave superconductor in a magnetic field. The field-induced vortices are assumed to be pinned at random positions and the effects of the scattering of the quasi-particles off the vorti ces are taken into account using the singular gauge transformation of Franz and Tesanovic. We find two regimes for the density of states: at very low energies the density of states follows a law rho(epsilon) sim rho_0 + |epsilon|^{alpha} where the exponent is close to 1. A good fit of the density of states is obtained at higher energies, excluding a narrow region around the origin, with a similar power law energy dependence but with alpha close to 2. Both at low and at higher energies rho_0 scales with the inverse of the magnetic length (sqrt{B}).

Measurements of the differential conductance spectra of YBa2Cu3O7-SrRuO3 and YBa2Cu3O7-La0.67Ca_0.33MnO3 ramp-type junctions along the node and anti-node directions are reported. The results are consistent with a crossed Andreev reflection effect onl y in YBa2Cu3O7-SrRuO3 junctions where the domain wall width of SrRuO3 is comparable with the coherence length of YBa2Cu3O7. No such effect was observed in the YBa2Cu3O7-La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 junctions, which is in line with the much larger (x10) domain wall width of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3. We also show that crossed Andreev exists only in the anti-node direction. Furthermore, we find evidence that crossed Andreev in YBa2Cu3O7 junctions is not sensitive to nm-scale interface defects, suggesting that the length scale of the crossed Andreev effect is larger than the coherence length, but still smaller than the La0.67Ca0.33MnO3s domain wall width.

Neutron scattering is used to probe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the d-wave heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_{5}$ (T$_{c}$=2.3 K). Superconductivity develops from a state with slow ($hbarGamma$=0.3 $pm$ 0.15 meV) commensurate (${bf{Q_0} }$=(1/2,1/2,1/2)) antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and nearly isotropic spin correlations. The characteristic wavevector in CeCoIn$_{5}$ is the same as CeIn$_{3}$ but differs from the incommensurate wavevector measured in antiferromagnetically ordered CeRhIn$_{5}$. A sharp spin resonance ($hbarGamma<0.07$ meV) at $hbar omega$ = 0.60 $pm$ 0.03 meV develops in the superconducting state removing spectral weight from low-energy transfers. The presence of a resonance peak is indicative of strong coupling between f-electron magnetism and superconductivity and consistent with a d-wave gap order parameter satisfying $Delta({bf q+Q_0})=-Delta({bf q})$.
