The compounds, PrCo9Si4 and NdCo9Si4, have been recently reported to exhibit first-order ferromagnetic transitions near 24 K. We have subjected this compound for further characterization by magnetization, heat-capacity and electrical resistivity measurements at low temperatures in the presence of magnetic fields, particularly to probe magnetocaloric effect and magnetoresistance. The compounds are found to exhibit rather modest magnetocaloric effect at low temperatures peaking at Curie temperature, tracking the behavior of magnetoresistance. The magnetic transition does not appear to be first order in its character.

We propose the phase diagram of a new pseudo-ternary compound, CoMnGe_{1-x}Sn_{x}, in the range x less than or equal to 0.1. Our phase diagram is a result of magnetic and calometric measurements. We demonstrate the appearance of a hysteretic magnetos tructural phase transition in the range x=0.04 to x=0.055, similar to that observed in CoMnGe under hydrostatic pressure. From magnetisation measurements, we show that the isothermal entropy change associated with the magnetostructural transition can be as high as 4.5 J/(K kg) in a field of 1 Tesla. However, the large thermal hysteresis in this transition (~20 K) will limit its straightforward use in a magnetocaloric device.
Neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements of the magneto refrigerant Mn1+yFe1-yP1-xGex reveal that the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases correspond to two very distinct crystal structures, with the magnetic entropy change as a function o f magnetic field or temperature being directly controlled by the phase fraction of this first-order transition. By tuning the physical properties of this system we have achieved a maximum magnetic entropy change exceeding 74 J/Kg K for both increasing and decreasing field, more than twice the value of the previous record.
We compute the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the GdTX (T=Sc, Ti, Co, Fe; X=Si, Ge) compounds as a function of the temperature and the external magnetic field. To this end we use a density functional theory approach to calculate the exchange-coupling interactions between Gd$^{3+}$ ions on each compound. We consider a simplified magnetic Hamiltonian and analyze the dependence of the exchange couplings on the transition metal T, the p-block element X, and the crystal structure (CeFeSi-type or CeScSi-type). The most significant effects are observed for the replacements Ti $to$ Sc or Fe $to$ Co which have an associated change in the parity of the electron number in the 3d level. These replacements lead to an antiferromagnetic contribution to the magnetic couplings that reduces the Curie temperature and can even lead to an antiferromagnetic ground state. We solve the magnetic models through mean field and Monte Carlo calculations and find large variations among compounds in the magnetic transition temperature and in the magnetocaloric effect, in agreement with the available experimental data. The magnetocaloric effect shows a universal behavior as a function of temperature and magnetic field in the ferromagnetic compounds after a scaling of the relevant energy scales by the Curie temperature $T_C$.

The interplay of charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom has recently received great interest due to its potential to improve the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) for the purpose of magnetic cooling applications. Here we propose a new mechani sm for a giant inverse MCE in rare-earth tetraborides, especially for Ho1-xDyxB4 (x = 0.0, 0.5, and 1.0). For x = 0.0, 0.5, and 1.0, the maximum entropy changes of the giant inverse MCE are found to be 22.7 J/kgK, 19.6 J/kgK, and 19.0 J/kgK with critical fields of 25 kOe, 40 kOe, and 50 kOe, respectively. It is remarkable that such a giant MCE is realized, even when applying a low magnetic field, which enables a field-tuned entropy change and brings about a significant advantage for several applications. For all compounds, we have systematically studied how the entropy changes as a function of the field and temperature and investigated their correlation with consecutive double transitions, i.e., the magnetic dipolar order at T = TN and the quadrupolar order at T = TQ (TQ < TN). We found that the maximum entropy change occurs at T = TQ and the critical field associated with the meta-magnetic transition, which is in good agreement with the experimental data. Thus, we elucidate that this unique behaviour is attributed to the strong coupling between magnetic dipoles and quadrupoles in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling and geometric frustration. Our work offers new insights into both the academic interest of multipolar degrees of freedom in magnetic materials and the discovery of giant MCE with various applications for magnetic cooling systems.
We present the results of a comparative analysis of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in Pr0.7Sr0.2Ca0.1MnO3, through direct and indirect measurements, using experimentally measured magnetization, specific heat, magnetostriction, resistivity, thermal d iffusivity and thermal conductivity parameters. We have demonstrated that the change in each parameter in response to a magnetic field near the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition temperature of the material correlates with the change in magnetic entropy. These findings allow us to interrelate these parameters and provide an alternative, effective approach for accessing the usefulness of magnetocaloric materials.
