We suggest that box shape trap enables to observe intrinsic properties of the repulsive Hubbard model in a fixed doping in contrast to the harmonic trap bringing about spatial variations of atom density profiles. In order to predict atomic density profile under the box trap, we apply the directly-extended density-matrix renormalization group method to 4-leg repulsive Hubbard model with the open boundary condition. Consequently, we find that stripe formation is universal in a low hole doping range and the stripe sensitively changes its structure with variations of $U/t$ and the doping rate. A remarkable change is that a stripe formed by a hole pair turns to one by a bi-hole pair when entering a limited strong $U/t$ range. Furthermore, a systematic calculation reveals that the Hubbard model shows a change from the stripe to the Friedel like oscillation with increasing the doping rate.

We report on the realization of a quantum degenerate atomic Fermi gas in an optical lattice. Fermi surfaces of noninteracting fermions are studied in a three-dimensional lattice. Using a Feshbach resonance, we observe a coupling of the Bloch bands in the strongly interacting regime.
Majorana modes can arise as zero energy bound states in a variety of solid state systems. A two-dimensional phase supporting these quasiparticles, for instance, emerges on the surface of a topological superconductor with the zero modes localized at t he cores of vortices. At low energies, such a setup can be modeled by Majorana modes that interact with each other on the Abrikosov lattice. In experiments, the lattice is usually triangular. Motivated by the practical relevance, we explore the phase diagram of this Hubbard-like Majorana model using a combination of mean field theory and numerical simulation of thin torus geometries through the density matrix renormalization group algorithm. Our analysis indicates that attractive interactions between Majoranas can drive a phase transition in an otherwise gapped topological state.
We develop an efficient method to calculate the third-order corrections to the self-energy of the hole-doped two-dimensional Hubbard model in space-time representation. Using the Dyson equation we evaluate the renormalized spectral function in variou s parts of the Brillouin zone and find significant modifications with respect to the second-order theory even for rather small values of the coupling constant U. The spectral function becomes unphysical for $ U simeq W $, where W is the half-width of the conduction band. Close to the Fermi surface and for U<W, the single-particle spectral weight is reduced in a finite energy interval around the Fermi energy. The increase of U opens a gap between the occupied and unoccupied parts of the spectral function.
We investigate the formation of stripes in $7chunks times 6$ Hubbard ladders with $4chunks$ holes doped away from half filling using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. A parallelized code allows us to keep enough density-matrix eigenstates (up to $m=8000$) and to study sufficiently large systems (with up to $7chunks = 21$ rungs) to extrapolate the stripe amplitude to the limits of vanishing DMRG truncation error and infinitely long ladders. Our work gives strong evidence that stripes exist in the ground state for strong coupling ($U=12t$) but that the structures found in the hole density at weaker coupling ($U=3t$) are an artifact of the DMRG approach.

We carry out textit{ab initio} study of ground state phase diagram of spin-1/2 cold fermionic atoms within two-fold degenerate $p$-band of an anisotropic optical lattice. Using the Gutzwiller variational approach, we show that a robust ferromagnetic phase exists for a vast range of band fillings and interacting strengths. The ground state crosses over from spin density wave state to spin-1 Neel state at half filling. Additional harmonic trap will induce spatial separation of varies phases. We also discuss several relevant observable consequences and detection methods. Experimental test of the results reported here may shed some light on the long-standing issue of itinerant ferromagnetism.
