We study Landau-Zener like dynamics of a qubit influenced by transverse random telegraph noise. The telegraph noise is characterized by its coupling strength, $v$ and switching rate, $gamma$. The qubit energy levels are driven nonlinearly in time, $propto sign(t)|t|^ u$, and we derive the transition probability in the limit of sufficiently fast noise, for arbitrary exponent $ u$. The longitudinal coherence after transition depends strongly on $ u$, and there exists a critical $ u_c$ with qualitative difference between $ u< u_c$ and $ u > u_c$. When $ u< u_c$ the end state is always fully incoherent with equal population of both quantum levels, even for arbitrarily weak noise. For $ u> u_c$ the system keeps some coherence depending on the strength of the noise, and in the limit of weak noise no transition takes place. For fast noise $ u_c=1/2$, while for slow noise $ u_c<1/2$ and it depends on $gamma$. We also discuss transverse coherence, which is relevant when the qubit has a nonzero minimum energy gap. The qualitative dependency on $ u$ is the same for transverse as for longitudinal coherence. The state after transition does in general depend on $gamma$. For fixed $v$, increasing $gamma$ decreases the final state coherence when $ u<1$ and increase the final state coherence when $ u>1$. Only the conventional linear driving is independent of $gamma$.

We demonstrate experimentally the possibility of revealing fluctuations in the eigenfrequency of a resonator when the frequency noise is of the telegraph type. Using a resonantly driven micromechanical resonator, we show that the time-averaged vibrat ion amplitude spectrum exhibits two peaks. They merge with an increasing rate of frequency switching and the spectrum displays an analog of motional narrowing. We also show that the moments of the complex amplitude depend strongly on the frequency noise characteristics. This dependence remains valid even when strong thermal or detector noise is present.

Effects of a periodic driving field on Landau-Zener processes are studied using a nonlinear two-mode model that describes the mean-field dynamics of a many-body system. A variety of different dynamical phenomena in different parameter regimes of the driving field are discussed and analyzed. These include shifted, weakened, or enhanced phase dependence of nonlinear Landau-Zener processes, nonlinearity-enhanced population transfer in the adiabatic limit, and Hamiltonian chaos on the mean field level. The emphasis of this work is placed on how the impact of a periodic driving field on Landau-Zener processes with self-interaction differs from those without self-interaction. Aside from gaining understandings of driven nonlinear Landau-Zener processes, our findings can be used to gauge the strength of nonlinearity and for efficient manipulation of the mean-field dynamics of many-body systems.
The energy and charge fluxes carried by electrons in a two-terminal junction subjected to a random telegraph noise, produced by a single electronic defect, are analyzed. The telegraph processes are imitated by the action of a stochastic electric fiel d that acts on the electrons in the junction. Upon averaging over all random events of the telegraph process, it is found that this electric field supplies, on the average, energy to the electronic reservoirs, which is distributed unequally between them: the stronger is the coupling of the reservoir with the junction, the more energy it gains. Thus the noisy environment can lead to a temperature gradient across an un-biased junction.
Landau-Zener physics is often exploited to generate quantum logic gates and to perform state initialization and readout. The quality of these operations can be degraded by noise fluctuations in the energy gap at the avoided crossing. We leverage a re cently discovered correspondence between qubit evolution and space curves in three dimensions to design noise-robust Landau-Zener sweeps through an avoided crossing. In the case where the avoided crossing is purely noise-induced, we prove that operations based on monotonic sweeps cannot be robust to noise. Hence, we design families of phase gates based on non-monotonic drives that are error-robust up to second order. In the general case where there is an avoided crossing even in the absence of noise, we present a general technique for designing robust driving protocols that takes advantage of a relationship between the Landau-Zener problem and space curves of constant torsion.
We report time-resolved measurements of Landau-Zener tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in accelerated optical lattices, clearly resolving the step-like time dependence of the band populations. Using different experimental protocols we were able to measure the tunneling probability both in the adiabatic and in the diabatic bases of the system. We also experimentally determine the contribution of the momentum width of the Bose condensates to the width of the tunneling steps and discuss the implications for measuring the jump time in the Landau-Zener problem.
