In a previous paper (Phase Transitions, 80(9), 987, 2007) we discussed the smectic and nematic textures of some mesomorphic oxadiazole compounds with terminal Cl-substituent. Optical microscope investigations showed a very interesting behaviour of smectic and nematic phases; the smectic phase has fan-shaped and toric textures and the nematic phase has spherulitic domains, which disappear as the sample is further heated, the texture changing into a smooth one. Here, we investigate four oxadiazole compounds with the same structure but terminal Br-substituent. The behaviour of the smectic and nematic phases is like that observed in the compounds with Cl. The focus of the paper is on the growth of toric domains from the nematic melt and on the role of defects in the domain structure.

When a family of non symmetrical heterocycled compounds is investigated, a variety of mesophases can be observed with rather different features. Here we report the behaviour of seven different members among a family of such materials, that consists o f mesomorphic oxadiazole compounds. In two of these compounds, the optical microscope investigation shows very interesting behaviours. In their smectic phases, fan-shaped and toric textures, sometimes with periodic instability, are observed. Moreover, the nematic phase displays a texture transition. Texture transitions have been previously observed only inside the nematic phase of some compounds belonging to the families of the oxybenzoic and cyclohexane acids. In these two oxadiazole compounds we can observe what we define as a toric nematic phase, heating the samples from the smectic phase. The toric nematic texture disappears as the sample is further heated, changing into a smooth texture.

Using a generalized Landau theory involving orientational, layering, tilt, and biaxial order parameters we analyze the smectic-A* and smectic-C* (Sm-A* -- Sm-C*) transition, showing that a combination of small orientational order and large layering o rder leads to Sm-A* -- Sm-C* transitions that are either continuous and close to tricriticality or first order. The model predicts that in such systems the increase in birefringence upon entry to the Sm-C* phase will be especially rapid. It also predicts that the change in layer spacing at the Sm-A* -- Sm-C* transition will be proportional to the orientational order. These are two hallmarks of Sm-A* -- Sm-C* transitions in de Vries materials. We analyze the electroclinic effect in the Sm-A* phase and show that as a result of the zero-field Sm-A* -- Sm-C* transition being either continuous and close to tricriticality or first order (i.e for systems with a combination of weak orientational order and strong layering order) the electroclinic response of the tilt will be unusually strong. Additionally, we investigate the associated electrically induced change in birefringence and layer spacing, demonstrating de Vries behavior for each, i.e. an unusually large increase in birefringence and an unusually small layer contraction. Both the induced change in birefringence and layer spacing are shown to scale quadratically with the induced tilt angle.

In this work, we have thoroughly studied the effects of flux composition and temperature on the crystal growth of the BaCu2As2 compound. While Pb and CuAs self-flux produce the well-known {alpha}-phase ThCr2Si2-type structure (Z=2), a new polymorphic phase of BaCu2As2 (b{eta} phase) with a much larger c lattice parameter (Z=10), which could be considered an intergrowth of the ThCr2Si2- and CaBe2Ge2-type structures, has been discovered via Sn flux growth. We have characterized this structure through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) studies. Furthermore, we compare this new polymorphic intergrowth structure with the {alpha}-phase BaCu2As2 (ThCr2Si2 type with Z=2) and the b{eta}-phase BaCu2Sb2 (intergrowth of ThCr2Si2 and CaBe2Ge2 types with Z=6), both with the same space group I4/mmm. Electrical transport studies reveal p-type carriers and magnetoresistivity up to 22% at 5 K and under a magnetic field of 7 T. Our work suggests a new route for the discovery of new polymorphic structures through flux and temperature control during material synthesis.

The novel strain-driven morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in highly-strained BiFeO3 thin film is featured by ordered mixed phase nanodomains (MPNs). Through scanning probe microscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, eight structural variants of the MPNs are identified. Detailed polarization configurations within the MPNs are resolved using angular-dependent piezoelectric force microscopy. Guided by the obtained results, deterministic manipulation of the MPNs has been demonstrated by controlling the motion of the local probe. These findings are important for in-depth understanding of the ultrahigh electromechanical response arising from phase transformation between competing phases, enabling future explorations on the electronic structure, magnetoelectricity and other functionalities in this new MPB system.
Two-dimensional (2D) magnets with intrinsic ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic (FM/AFM) ordering are highly desirable for future spintronics devices. However, the synthesis of 2D magnetic crystals, especially the direct growth on SiO2/Si substrate, is j ust in its infancy. Here, we report a chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-based rational growth approach for the synthesis of ultrathin FeTe crystals with controlled structural and magnetic phases. By precisely optimizing the growth temperature (Tgrowth), FeTe nanoplates with either layered tetragonal or non-layered hexagonal phase can be controlled with high-quality. The two controllable phases lead to square and triangular morphologies with a thickness down to 3.6 and 2.8 nm, respectively. More importantly, transport measurements reveal that tetragonal FeTe is antiferromagnetic with a Neel temperature (TN) about 71.8 K, while hexagonal FeTe is ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature (TC) around 220 K. Theoretical calculations indicate that the ferromagnetic order in hexagonal FeTe is originated from a concomitant lattice distortion and the spin-lattice coupling. This study represents a major step forward in the CVD growth of 2D magnetic materials on SiO2/Si substrates and highlights on their potential applications in the future spintronic devices.
