We present a new multi-component spectral energy distribution (SED) decomposition method and use it to analyze the ultraviolet to millimeter wavelength SEDs of a sample of dusty infrared-luminous galaxies. SEDs are constructed from spectroscopic and photometric data obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope, in conjunction with photometry from the literature. Each SED is decomposed into emission from populations of stars, an AGN accretion disk, PAHs, atomic and molecular lines, and distributions of graphite and silicate grains. Decompositions of the SEDs of the template starburst galaxies NGC7714 and NGC2623 and the template AGNs PG0804+761 and Mrk463 provide baseline properties to aid in quantifying the strength of star-formation and accretion in the composite systems NGC6240 and Mrk1014. We find that obscured radiation from stars is capable of powering the total dust emission from NGC6240, although we cannot rule out a contribution from a deeply embedded AGN visible only in X-rays. The decomposition of Mrk1014 is consistent with ~65% of its power emerging from an AGN and ~35% from star-formation. We suggest that many of the variations in our template starburst SEDs may be explained in terms of the different mean optical depths through the clouds of dust surrounding the young stars within each galaxy. Prompted by the divergent far-IR properties of our template AGNs, we suggest that variations in the relative orientation of their AGN accretion disks with respect to the disks of the galaxies hosting them may result in different amounts of AGN-heated cold dust emission emerging from their host galaxies. We estimate that 30-50% of the far-IR and PAH emission from Mrk1014 may originate from such AGN-heated material in its host galaxy disk.

Fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies is an almost universally used technique that has matured significantly in the last decade. Model predictions and fitting procedures have improved significantly over this time, attempting to keep up with the vastly increased volume and quality of available data. We review here the field of SED fitting, describing the modelling of ultraviolet to infrared galaxy SEDs, the creation of multiwavelength data sets, and the methods used to fit model SEDs to observed galaxy data sets. We touch upon the achievements and challenges in the major ingredients of SED fitting, with a special emphasis on describing the interplay between the quality of the available data, the quality of the available models, and the best fitting technique to use in order to obtain a realistic measurement as well as realistic uncertainties. We conclude that SED fitting can be used effectively to derive a range of physical properties of galaxies, such as redshift, stellar masses, star formation rates, dust masses, and metallicities, with care taken not to over-interpret the available data. Yet there still exist many issues such as estimating the age of the oldest stars in a galaxy, finer details ofdust properties and dust-star geometry, and the influences of poorly understood, luminous stellar types and phases. The challenge for the coming years will be to improve both the models and the observational data sets to resolve these uncertainties. The present review will be made available on an interactive, moderated web page (sedfitting.org), where the community can access and change the text. The intention is to expand the text and keep it up to date over the coming years.
The sensitivity and angular resolution of photometric surveys executed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) enable studies of individual star clusters in galaxies out to a few tens of megaparsecs. The fitting of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of star clusters is essential for measuring their physical properties and studying their evolution. We report on the use of the publicly available Code Investigating GALaxy Emission (CIGALE) SED fitting package to derive ages, stellar masses, and reddenings for star clusters identified in the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS-HST (PHANGS-HST) survey. Using samples of star clusters in the galaxy NGC 3351, we present results of benchmark analyses performed to validate the code and a comparison to SED fitting results from the Legacy ExtraGalactic Ultraviolet Survey (LEGUS). We consider procedures for the PHANGS-HST SED fitting pipeline, e.g., the choice of single stellar population models, the treatment of nebular emission and dust, and the use of fluxes versus magnitudes for the SED fitting. We report on the properties of clusters in NGC 3351 and find, on average, the clusters residing in the inner star-forming ring of NGC 3351 are young ($< 10$ Myr) and massive ($10^{5} M_{odot}$) while clusters in the stellar bulge are significantly older. Cluster mass function fits yield $beta$ values around -2, consistent with prior results with a tendency to be shallower at the youngest ages. Finally, we explore a Bayesian analysis with additional physically-motivated priors for the distribution of ages and masses and analyze the resulting cluster distributions.
We combine near-to-mid-IR Spitzer data with shorter wavelength observations (optical to X-rays) to get insights on the properties of a sample of luminous, obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We aim at modeling their broad-band Spectral Energy Dist ributions (SEDs) in order to estimate the main parameters related to the dusty torus. The sample comprises 16 obscured high-redshift (0.9<z<2.1) xray luminous quasars (L_2-10 ~ 10^44 erg s-1) selected from the HELLAS2XMM survey. The SEDs are described by a multi-component model including a stellar component, an AGN component and a starburst. The majority (~80%) of the sources show moderate optical depth (tau_9.7um<3) and the derived column densities N_H are consistent with the xray inferred values (10^22 <N_H< 3x10^23 cm-2) for most of the objects, confirming that the sources are moderately obscured Compton-thin AGN. Accretion luminosities in the range 5x10^44 < Lbol < 4x10^46 erg s-1 are inferred. We compare model luminosities with those obtained by integrating the observed SED, finding that the latter are lower by a factor of ~2 in the median. The discrepancy can be as high as an order of magnitude for models with high optical depth (tau_9.7um=10). The ratio between the luminosities obtained by the fitting procedure and from the observed SED suggest that, at least for Type~2 AGN, observed bolometric luminosities are likely to underestimate intrinsic ones and the effect is more severe for highly obscured sources. Bolometric corrections from the hard X-ray band are computed and have a median value of k_2-10kev ~ 20. The obscured AGN in our sample are characterized by relatively low Eddington ratios (median lambda_Edd~0.08). On average, they are consistent with the Eddington ratio increasing at increasing bolometric correction (e.g. Vasudevan & Fabiam 2009).

We have acquired radio continuum data between 70,MHz and 48,GHz for a sample of 19 southern starburst galaxies at moderate redshifts ($0.067 < z < 0.227$) with the aim of separating synchrotron and free-free emission components. Using a Bayesian fram ework we find the radio continuum is rarely characterised well by a single power law, instead often exhibiting low frequency turnovers below 500,MHz, steepening at mid-to-high frequencies, and a flattening at high frequencies where free-free emission begins to dominate over the synchrotron emission. These higher order curvature components may be attributed to free-free absorption across multiple regions of star formation with varying optical depths. The decomposed synchrotron and free-free emission components in our sample of galaxies form strong correlations with the total-infrared bolometric luminosities. Finally, we find that without accounting for free-free absorption with turnovers between 90 to 500,MHz the radio-continuum at low frequency ($ u < 200$,MHz) could be overestimated by upwards of a factor of twelve if a simple power law extrapolation is used from higher frequencies. The mean synchrotron spectral index of our sample is constrained to be $alpha=-1.06$, which is steeper then the canonical value of $-0.8$ for normal galaxies. We suggest this may be caused by an intrinsically steeper cosmic ray distribution.

We present piXedfit, pixelized spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, a Python package that provides tools for analyzing spatially resolved properties of galaxies using multiband imaging data alone or in combination with integral field spectrosc opy (IFS) data. piXedfit has six modules that can handle all tasks in the spatially resolved SED fitting. The SED fitting module uses the Bayesian inference technique with two kinds of posteriors sampling methods: Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and random densely-sampling of parameter space (RDSPS). We test the performance of the SED fitting module using mock SEDs of simulated galaxies from IllustrisTNG. The SED fitting with both posteriors sampling methods can recover physical properties and star formation histories of the IllustrisTNG galaxies well. We further test the performance of piXedfit modules by analyzing 20 galaxies observed by the CALIFA and MaNGA surveys. The data comprises of 12-band imaging data from GALEX, SDSS, 2MASS, and WISE, and the IFS data from CALIFA or MaNGA. piXedfit can spatially match (in resolution and sampling) of the imaging and IFS data. By fitting only the photometric SEDs, piXedfit can predict the spectral continuum, $text{D}_{rm n}4000$, $H_{alpha}$, and $H_{beta}$ well. The star formation rate (SFR) derived by piXedfit is consistent with that derived from $H_{alpha}$ emission. The RDSPS method gives equally good fitting results as the MCMC and it is much faster than the MCMC. piXedfit is a versatile tool equipped with a parallel computing module for efficient analysis of large datasets, and will be made publicly available (https://github.com/aabdurrouf/piXedfit).
