Combining analytical and numerical methods, we study within the framework of the homogeneous non-linear Boltzmann equation, a broad class of models relevant for the dynamics of dissipative fluids, including granular gases. We use the new method presented in a previous paper [J. Stat. Phys. 124, 549 (2006)] and extend our results to a different heating mechanism, namely a deterministic non-linear friction force. We derive analytically the high energy tail of the velocity distribution and compare the theoretical predictions with high precision numerical simulations. Stretched exponential forms are obtained when the non-equilibrium steady state is stable. We derive sub-leading corrections and emphasize their relevance. In marginal stability cases, power-law behaviors arise, with exponents obtained as the roots of transcendental equations. We also consider some simple BGK (Bhatnagar, Gross, Krook) models, driven by similar heating devices, to test the robustness of our predictions.

The solutions of the one-dimensional homogeneous nonlinear Boltzmann equation are studied in the QE-limit (Quasi-Elastic; infinitesimal dissipation) by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. Their behavior at large velocities differs q ualitatively from that for higher dimensional systems. In our generic model, a dissipative fluid is maintained in a non-equilibrium steady state by a stochastic or deterministic driving force. The velocity distribution for stochastic driving is regular and for infinitesimal dissipation, has a stretched exponential tail, with an unusual stretching exponent $b_{QE} = 2b$, twice as large as the standard one for the corresponding $d$-dimensional system at finite dissipation. For deterministic driving the behavior is more subtle and displays singularities, such as multi-peaked velocity distribution functions. We classify the corresponding velocity distributions according to the nature and scaling behavior of such singularities.

The algorithm for Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD), as modified by Espagnol and Warren, is used as a starting point for proving an H-theorem for the free energy and deriving hydrodynamic equations. Equilibrium and transport properties of the DPD f luid are explicitly calculated in terms of the system parameters for the continuous time version of the model.

An intriguing phenomenon displayed by granular flows and predicted by kinetic-theory-based models is the instability known as particle clustering, which refers to the tendency of dissipative grains to form transient, loose regions of relatively high concentration. In this work, we assess a modified-Sonine approximation recently proposed [Garzo et al., Physica A 376, 94 (2007)] for a granular gas via an examination of system stability. In particular, we determine the critical length scale associated with the onset of two types of instabilities -vortices and clusters- via stability analyses of the Navier-Stokes-order hydrodynamic equations by using the expressions of the transport coefficients obtained from both the standard and the modified-Sonine approximations. We examine the impact of both Sonine approximations over a range of solids fraction phi <0.2 for small restitution coefficients e=0.25--0.4, where the standard and modified theories exhibit discrepancies. The theoretical predictions for the critical length scales are compared to molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, of which a small percentage were not considered due to inelastic collapse. Results show excellent quantitative agreement between MD and the modified-Sonine theory, while the standard theory loses accuracy for this highly dissipative parameter space. The modified theory also remedies a (highdissipation) qualitative mismatch between the standard theory and MD for the instability that forms more readily. Furthermore, the evolution of cluster size is briefly examined via MD, indicating that domain-size clusters may remain stable or halve in size, depending on system parameters.
A self-consistent and universal description of friction and diffusion for Brownian particles (grains) in different systems, as a gas with Boltzmann collisions, dusty plasma with ion absorption by grains, and for active particles (e.g., cells in biolo gical systems) is suggested on the basis of the appropriate Fokker-Planck equation. Restrictions for application of the Fokker-Planck equation to the problem of velocity-dependent friction and diffusion coefficients are found. General description for this coefficient is formulated on the basis of master equation. Relation of the diffusion coefficient in the coordinate and velocity spaces is found for active (capable to transfer momentum to the ambient media) and passive particles in the framework of the Fokker-Planck equation. The problem of anomalous space diffusion is formulated on the basis of the appropriate probability transition (PT) function. The method of partial differentiation is avoided to construct the correct probability distributions for arbitrary distances, what is important for applications to different stochastic problems. Generale equation for time-dependent PT function is formulated and discussed. Generalized friction in the velocity space is determined and applied to describe the friction force itself as well as the drag force in the case of a non-zero driven ion velocity in plasmas. The negative friction due to ion scattering on grains exists and can be realized for the appropriate experimental conditions.

We connect two different generalizations of Boltzmanns kinetic theory by requiring the same stationary solution. Non-extensive statistics can be produced by either using corresponding collision rates nonlinear in the one-particle densities or equival ently by using nontrivial energy composition rules in the energy conservation constraint. Direct transformation formulas between key functions of the two approaches are given.
