In order to assess possible observable effects of noncommutativity in deformations of quantum mechanics, all irreducible representations of the noncommutative Heisenberg algebra and Weyl-Heisenberg group on the two-torus are constructed. This analysis extends the well known situation for the noncommutative torus based on the algebra of the noncommuting position operators only. When considering the dynamics of a free particle for any of the identified representations, no observable effect of noncommutativity is implied.

We discuss noncommutative solitons on a noncommutative torus and their application to tachyon condensation. In the large B limit, they can be exactly described by the Powers-Rieffel projection operators known in the mathematical literature. The resul ting soliton spectrum is consistent with T-duality and is surprisingly interesting. It is shown that an instability arises for any D-branes, leading to the decay into many smaller D-branes. This phenomenon is the consequence of the fact that K-homology for type II von Neumann factor is labeled by R.

For the noncommutative 2-torus, we define and study Fourier transforms arising from representations of states with central supports in the bidual, exhibiting a possibly nontrivial modular structure (i.e. type III representations). We then prove the associated noncommutative analogous of Riemann-Lebesgue Lemma and Hausdorff-Young Theorem. In addition, the $L^p$- convergence result of the Cesaro means (i.e. the Fejer theorem), and the Abel means reproducing the Poisson kernel are also established, providing inversion formulae for the Fourier transforms in $L^p$ spaces, $pin[1,2]$. Finally, in $L^2(M)$ we show how such Fourier transforms diagonalise appropriately some particular cases of modular Dirac operators, the latter being part of a one-parameter family of modular spectral triples naturally associated to the previously mentioned non type ${rm II}_1$ representations.
It is well known that for any irrational rotation number $a$, the noncommutative torus $ba_a$ must have representations $pi$ such that the generated von Neumann algebra $pi(ba_a)$ is of type $ty{III}$. Therefore, it could be of interest to exhibit an d investigate such kind of representations, together with the associated spectral triples whose twist of the Dirac operator and the corresponding derivation arises from the Tomita modular operator. In the present paper, we show that this program can be carried out, at least when $a$ is a Liouville number satisfying a faster approximation property by rationals. In this case, we exhibit several type $ty{II_infty}$ and $ty{III_l}$, $lin[0,1]$, factor representations and modular spectral triples. The method developed in the present paper can be generalised to CCR algebras based on a locally compact abelian group equipped with a symplectic form.
Non-abelian discrete symmetries are of particular importance in model building. They are mainly invoked to explain the various fermion mass hierarchies and forbid dangerous superpotential terms. In string models they are usually associated to the geo metry of the compactification manifold and more particularly to the magnetised branes in toroidal compactifications. Motivated by these facts, in this note we propose a unified framework to construct representations of finite discrete family groups based on the automorphisms of the discrete and finite Heisenberg group. We focus in particular in the $PSL_2(p)$ groups which contain the phenomenologically interesting cases.
We propose an extension of the BMS group, which we refer to as Weyl BMS or BMSW for short, that includes, besides super-translations, local Weyl rescalings and arbitrary diffeomorphisms of the 2d sphere metric. After generalizing the Barnich-Troessae rt bracket, we show that the Noether charges of the BMSW group provide a centerless representation of the BMSW Lie algebra at every cross section of null infinity. This result is tantamount to proving that the flux-balance laws for the Noether charges imply the validity of the asymptotic Einsteins equations at null infinity. The extension requires a holographic renormalization procedure, which we construct without any dependence on background fields. The renormalized phase space of null infinity reveals new pairs of conjugate variables. Finally, we show that BMSW group elements label the gravitational vacua.
