Since the dawn of the new millennium, there has been a revived interest in the concept of extra dimensions. In this scenario all the standard model matter and gauge fields are confined to the 4 dimensions and only gravity can escape to higher dimensions of the universe. This idea can be tested using table-top experiments, collider experiments, astrophysical or cosmological observations. The main astrophysical constraints come from the cooling rate of supernovae, neutron stars, red giants and the sun. In this article, we consider the energy loss mechanism of SN1987A and study the constraints it places on the number and size of extra dimensions and the higher dimensional Planck scale.

We investigate preheating in a higher-dimensional generalized Kaluza-Klein theory with a quadratic inflaton potential $V(phi)=frac12 m^2phi^2$ including metric perturbations explicitly. The system we consider is the multi-field model where there exis ts a dilaton field $sigma$ which corresponds to the scale of compactifications and another scalar field $chi$ coupled to inflaton with the interaction $frac12 g^2phi^2chi^2+tilde{g}^2phi^3chi$. In the case of $tilde{g}=0$, we find that the perturbation of dilaton does not undergo parametric amplification while the $chi$ field fluctuation can be enhanced in the usual manner by parametric resonance. In the presence of the $tilde{g}^2phi^3chi$ coupling, the dilaton fluctuation in sub-Hubble scales is modestly amplified by the growth of metric perturbations for the large coupling $tilde{g}$. In super-Hubble scales, the enhancement of the dilaton fluctuation as well as metric perturbations is weak, taking into account the backreaction effect of created $chi$ particles. We argue that not only is it possible to predict the ordinary inflationary spectrum in large scales but extra dimensions can be held static during preheating in our scenario.
We consider the universal extra dimensions scenario of Appelquist, Cheng, and Dobrescu, in which all of the SM fields propagate into one extra compact dimension, estimated therein to be as large as $sim (350$ GeV$)^{-1}$. Tree-level KK number conserv ation dictates that the associated KK excitations can not be singly produced. We calculate the cross sections for the direct production of KK excitations of the gluon, $gs$, and two distinct towers of quarks, qs and $qt$, in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron Run I and II energies in addition to proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider energy. The experimental signatures for these processes depend on the stability of the lowest-lying KK excitations of the gluons and light quarks. We find that the Tevatron Run I mass bound for KK quark and gluon final states is about 350--400 GeV, while Run II can push this up to 450--500 GeV at its initial luminosity and 500--550 GeV if the projected final luminosity is reached. The LHC can probe much further: The LHC will either discover UED KK excitations of quarks and gluons or extend the mass limit to about 3 TeV.
We present a brane-world scenario in which two regions of $AdS_5$ space-time are glued together along a 3-brane with constant positive curvature such that {em all} spatial dimensions form a compact manifold of topology $S^4$. It turns out that the in duced geometry on the brane is given by Einsteins static universe. It is possible to achieve an anisotropy of the manifold which allows for a huge hierarchy between the size of the extra dimension $R$ and the size of the observable universe $R_U$ at present. This anisotropy is also at the origin of a very peculiar property of our model: the physical distance between {em any two points} on the brane is of the order of the size of the extra dimension $R$ regardless of their distance measured with the use of the induced metric on the brane. In an intermediate distance regime $R ll r ll R_U$ gravity on the brane is shown to be effectively 4-dimensional, with corresponding large distance corrections, in complete analogy with the Randall-Sundrum II model. For very large distances $r sim R_U$ we recover gravity in Einsteins static universe. However, in contrast to the Randall-Sundrum II model the difference in topology has the advantage of giving rise to a geodesically complete space.
In this paper we study the general scenario of an effective theory coming from the compactification of a higher dimensional theory in a string inspired setting. This leads to gauge coupling unification at an intermediate mass scale. After having comp uted all the threshold corrections (due to Kaluza-Klein modes) to the running of the couplings of the MSSM we embark in a detailed phenomenological analysis of the model, based on the numerical package DarkSUSY, to find constraints on the scenario from Dark Matter data. The mass spectrum of the theory does not have tachyons. Moreover we find that the neutralino is still the LSP with a relic density compatible with the most recent experimental data. With respect to the standard mSUGRA scenario we find that the neutralino is higgsino like in most of the parameter space. Our modifications to the DarkSUSY package will be shortly available upon request.

I give a pedagogical introduction to the concepts and the tools that are necessary to study particle physics models in higher dimensions. I then give a more detailed presentation of warped compactifications and discuss their possible relevance to the hierarchy problem.
