Motivated by applications to black hole physics and duality, we study the effect of higher derivative corrections on the dimensional reduction of four-dimensional Einstein, Einstein Liouville and Einstein-Maxwell gravity to one direction, as appropriate for stationary, spherically symmetric solutions. We construct a field redefinition scheme such that the one-dimensional Lagrangian is corrected only by powers of first derivatives of the fields, eliminating spurious modes and providing a suitable starting point for quantization. We show that the Ehlers symmetry, broken by the leading $R^2$ corrections in Einstein-Liouville gravity, can be restored by including contributions of Taub-NUT instantons. Finally, we give a preliminary discussion of the duality between higher-derivative F-term corrections on the vector and hypermultiplet branches in N=2 supergravity in four dimensions.

In this paper we propose a non-minimal, and ghost free, coupling between the gauge field and the fermionic one from which we obtain, perturbatively, terms with higher order derivatives as quantum corrections to the photon effective action in the low energy regime. We calculate the one-loop effective action of the photon field and show that, in addition to the Euler-Heisenberg terms, the well known Lee-Wick term, $sim F_{mu u}partial_{alpha}partial^{alpha}F^{mu u}$, arises in low energy regime as a quantum correction from the model. We also obtain the electron self energy in leading order.
We analyse four-dimensional gravity in the presence of general curvature squared corrections and show that Ehlers SL(2,R) symmetry, which appears in the reduction of standard gravity to three dimensions, is preserved by the correction terms. The mech anism allowing this is a correction of the SL(2,R) transformation laws which resolves problems with the different scaling behaviour of various terms occurring in the reduction.

We construct the first rotating string solution in 6-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet supergravity, carrying both electric and magnetic charges. By embedding the known rotating string solution of the 2-derivative theory into 6-dimensional off-shell supergravity, the Killing spinors associated with the underlying supersymmetry can be made off-shell and are universal to all off-shell supergravity models based on the same field content. The near-horizon geometry is S^3 fibred over the extremal BTZ black hole, locally isomorphic to AdS_3*S^3. We compute the higher-derivative corrections to the Brown-Henneaux central charges in a particular R+R^2 model resulting from K3 compactification of type IIA string theory.
Dyonic non-Abelian local/semi-global vortex strings are studied in detail in supersymmetric/non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Higgs theories. While the BPS tension formula is known to be the same as that for the BPS dyonic instanton, we find that the non -BPS tension formula is approximated very well by the well-known tension formula of the BPS dyon. We show that this mysterious tension formula for the dyonic non-BPS vortex stings can be understood from the perspective of a low energy effective field theory. Furthermore, we propose an efficient method to obtain an effective theory of a single vortex string, which includes not only lower derivative terms but also all order derivative corrections by making use of the tension formula. We also find a novel dyonic vortex string whose internal orientation vectors rotate in time and spiral along the string axis.
We dimensionally reduce the spacetime action of bosonic string theory, and that of the bosonic sector of heterotic string theory after truncating the Yang-Mills gauge fields, on a $d$-dimensional torus including all higher-derivative corrections to f irst order in $alpha$. A systematic procedure is developed that brings this action into a minimal form in which all fields except the metric carry only first order derivatives. This action is shown to be invariant under ${rm O}(d,d,mathbb{R})$ transformations that acquire $alpha$-corrections through a Green-Schwarz type mechanism. We prove that, up to a global pre-factor, the first order $alpha$-corrections are uniquely determined by ${rm O}(d,d,mathbb{R})$ invariance.
