It was suggested that the two consecutive metamagnetic transitions and the large residual resistivity discovered in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ can be understood via the nematic order and its domains in a single layer system. However, a recently reported anisotropy between two longitudinal resistivities induced by tilting the magnetic field away from the c-axis cannot be explained within the single layer nematic picture. To fill the gap in our understanding within the nematic order scenario, we investigate the effects of bilayer coupling and in-plane magnetic field on the electronic nematic phases in a bilayer system. We propose that the in-plane magnetic field in the bilayer system modifies the energetics of the domain formation, since it breaks the degeneracy of two different nematic orientations. Thus the system reveals a pure nematic phase with a resistivity anisotropy in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. In addition to the nematic phase, the bilayer coupling opens a novel route to a hidden nematic phase that preserves the x-y symmetry of the Fermi surfaces.

Bilayer ruthenate Ca$_3$(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)$_2$O$_7$ ($x$ = 0.05) exhibits an incommensurate magnetic soliton lattice driven by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here we report complex field-induced magnetic phase transitions and memory effect in this system via single-crystal neutron diffraction and magnetotransport measurements. We observe first-order incommensurate-to-commensurate magnetic transitions upon applying the magnetic field both along and perpendicular to the propagation axis of the incommensurate spin structure. Furthermore, we find that the metastable states formed upon decreasing the magnetic field depend on the temperature and the applied field orientation. We suggest that the observed field-induced metastability may be ascribable to the quenched kinetics at low temperature.

By performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the bilayer colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganite, $La_{2-2x}Sr_{1+2x}Mn_{2}O_{7}$, we provide the complete mapping of the Fermi level spectral weight topology. Clear and unambiguous bila yer splitting of the in-plane 3d$_{x^2-y^2}$ band, mapped throughout the Brillouin zone, and the full mapping of the 3d$_{3z^2-r^2}$ band are reported. Peculiar doping and temperature dependencies of these bands imply that as transition from the ferromagnetic metallic phase approaches, either as a function of doping or temperature, coherence along the c-axis between planes within the bilayer is lost, resulting in reduced interplane coupling. These results suggest that interplane coupling plays a large role in the CMR transition.
We report the results of low temperature transport, specific heat and magnetisation measurements on high quality single crystals of the bilayer perovskite Sr3Ru2O7, which is a close relative of the unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4. Metamagnetism is observed, and transport and thermodynamic evidence for associated critical fluctuations is presented. These relatively unusual fluctuations might be pictured as variations in the Fermi surface topography itself. No equivalent behaviour has been observed in the metallic state of Sr2RuO4.
We report on the observation of stable electrical oscillation in Pt/VO2 bilayer strips, in which the Pt overlayer serves the dual purposes of heating up the VO2 and weakening the electric field in the VO2 layer. Systematic measurements in an ultrahig h vacuum nanoprobe system show that the oscillation frequency increases with the bias current and/or with decreasing device dimension. In contrast to most VO2-based oscillators reported to date, which are electrically triggered, current-induced Joule heating in the Pt overlayer is found to play a dominant role in the generation of oscillation in Pt/VO2 bilayers. A simple model involving thermally triggered transition of VO2 on a heat sink is able to account for the experimental observations. The results in this work provide an alternative view of the triggering mechanism in VO2-based oscillators.
We explore several classes of quadrupolar ordering in a system of antiferromagnetically coupled quantum spin-1 dimers, which are stacked in the triangular lattice geometry forming a bilayer. Low-energy properties of this model is described by an $mat hcal{S}=1$ hard-core bosonic degrees of freedom defined on each dimer-bond, where the singlet and triplet states of the dimerized spins are interpreted as the vacuum and the occupancy of boson, respectively. The number of bosons per dimer and the magnetic and density fluctuations of bosons are controlled by the inter-dimer Heisenberg interactions. In a solid phase where each dimer hosts one boson and the inter-dimer interaction is weak, a conventional spin nematic phase is realized by the pair-fluctuation of bosons. Larger inter-dimer interaction favors Bose Einstein condensates (BEC) carrying quadrupolar moments. Among them, we find one exotic phase where the quadrupoles develop a spatially modulated structure on the top of a uniform BEC, interpreted in the original dimerized spin-1 model as coexistent $p$-type nematic and 120$^circ$-magnetic correlations. This may explain an intriguing nonmagnetic phase found in Ba$_{3}$ZnRu$_{2}$O$_{9}$.
