Finite size effect on the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, TN, of Co3O4 nanoparticles of 75, 35, and 16 nm in diameter, has been investigated. The AFM transition point, TN, reduces with the decreasing diameter, d. Along with the results from the previous experiments on the Co3O4 nanoparticles of 8 and 4.3 nm, the variation of TN with d appears to follow the finite size relation. According to the scaling behavior, the shift exponent is determined as lambda = 1.4 pm 0.4, the correlation length, ksi_0 = 3.0 pm 0.3 nm, and the bulk Neel temperature, TN(infint) = 38.6 pm 0.7 K.

The scaling of antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of corundum-type chromia films have been investigated. Neel temperature $T_N$ was determined from the effect of perpendicular exchange-bias on the magnetization of a weakly-coupled adjacent ferrom agnet. For a thick-film case, the validity of detection is confirmed by a susceptibility measurement. Detection of $T_N$ was possible down to 1-nm-thin chromia films. The scaling of ordering temperature with thickness was studied using different buffering materials, and compared with Monte-Carlo simulations. The spin-correlation length and the corresponding critical exponent were estimated, and they were consistent between experimental and simulation results. The spin-correlation length is an order of magnitude less than cubic antiferromagnets. We propose that the difference is from the change of number of exchange-coupling links in the two crystal systems.
In order to better understand the transition from quantum to classical behavior in spin system, electron magnetic resonance (EMR) is studied in suspensions of superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles with an average diameter of ~ 9 nm and analyzed i n comparison with the results obtained in the maghemite particles of smaller size (~ 5 nm). It is shown that both types of particles demonstrate common EMR behavior, including special features such as the temperature-dependent narrow spectral component and multiple-quantum transitions. These features are common for small quantum systems and not expected in classical case. The relative intensity of these signals rapidly decreases with cooling or increase of particle size, marking gradual transition to the classical FMR behavior.

We have studied the magnetic and power absorption properties of a series of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) of Fe3O4 with average sizes <d> ranging from 3 to 26 nm. Heating experiments as a function of particle size revealed a strong increase in the sp ecific power absorption (SPA) values for particles with <d> = 25-30 nm. On the other side saturation magnetization MS values of these MNPs remain essentially constant for particles with <d> above 10 nm, suggesting that the absorption mechanism is not determined by MS. The largest SPA value obtained was 130 W/g, corresponding to a bimodal particle distribution with average size values of 17 and 26 nm.
Most multiferroic materials with coexisting ferroelectric and magnetic order exhibit cycloidal antiferromagnetism with wavelength of several nanometers. The prototypical example is bismuth ferrite (BiFeO$_3$ or BFO), a room-temperature multiferroic c onsidered for a number of technological applications. While most applications require small sizes such as nanoparticles, little is known about the state of these materials when their sizes are comparable to the cycloid wavelength. This work describes a microscopic theory of cycloidal magnetism in nanoparticles based on Hamiltonian calculations. It is demonstrated that magnetic anisotropy close to the surface has a huge impact on the multiferroic ground state. For certain nanoparticle sizes the modulus of the ferromagnetic and ferroelectric moments are bistable, an effect that may be used in the design of ideal memory bits that can be switched electrically and read out magnetically.
When decreasing the size of nanoscale magnetic particles their magnetization becomes vulnerable to thermal fluctuations as approaching the superparamgnetic limit, hindering thus applications relying on a stable magnetization. Here, we show theoretica lly that a magnetoelectric coupling to a ferroelectric substrate renders possible the realization of substantially smaller nano clusters with thermally stable magnetization. For an estimate of cluster size we perform calculations with realistic material parameters for iron nano particles on ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrate. We find, steering the polarization of BaTiO3 with electric fields affects the magnetism of the deposited magnetic clusters. These findings point to a qualitatively new class of superparamagnetic composites.
